JW,

I was very interested in your post and went right away to Petstop.  It sounds great.  I have 3 cats which go outside everyday and I so worry about them and the road out front plus the coyotes I hear at night (they are NEVER out at night though).  I would love to keep them in the yard.  I need to discuss this with DH.  Thanks for the info ;)

Pond Chat / Re: pond pedicure, even better with a pleco!
« on: September 11, 2009, 01:26:52 PM »
That's a big pleco!

I remember there were fish pedicures at actual nail shops in Europe.  They used some kind of goldish fish.  It was expensive to have your feet put in a "box" of water and have the fish eat the dead skin off.

I agree with Joyce...a stink bug.  They are like skunks.  Won't do anything to you unless you aggravate them and then watch out.  These bugs really do smell bad.  I learned as a kid not to mess with them  :P

Ester,

I used to get this magazine and I loved the recipes in it.  They had one for meatloaf using the stovetop and it was fantastic.  If fact, I still make it.  They use alot of the Kraft dressings (well, or course!) for cooking in and pouring over.  I was amazed at how good some of them taste.  I've tried to re-sign up so I could keep receiving the magazine but they say I'm already registered yet I still don't get the magazine.

YIKES!!

It looks like a baby tarantula.  I still would of caught it and thrown it over the wall.  It is just to big to squish.

Pond Chat / Re: Do robins fish in ponds???
« on: August 26, 2009, 09:40:39 AM »
I think they are just "flocking" and getting ready to leave for the summer.    They just happened to be in your yard.  Robins won't hurt your fish.      I only see large numbers of grackles in the spring when they are returning from down south and in the fall when they are leaving.  SO SAD........ :'(

Dateline or 20/20 did a story on this.  The guy who did this was young, like 26 at the time and involved his wife too.  His wife turned on him and got a reduced sentence.   From all accounts the couple he killed were just nice, regular people who wanted to be closer to their grandchild.  I really hope this killer is suffering in jail.   I do support the death penalty but when you're dead, you're dead.  Suffering for years and years in prison, especially when you're so young, seems fitting.

Gosh!  Your pond water is so clear.  Beautiful.

Coleus do eventually bloom but the flowers are sort of spiky and not to colorful.  Its the foliage we all go for when we plant coleus.

I agree with Aravenschild.  I does look a little like a frog....and a frog that's been there for quite a while.  Maybe your fishies cleaned the carcass over time.  That IS really freaky.

HAHAHAHAHAHA, Joyce...

I haven't attempted tropicals yet.  My pond is in its first full year and I was only getting the "usual" pond plants.  I didn't want to buy plants this year that wouldn't last because of the 10 months of cold weather we have here in Mass :'(

My lilies bloom at water level.  How come yours are so high?

Pond Chat / Re: String algae
« on: August 10, 2009, 12:08:03 PM »
I, too, have string algae but NOTHING like yours.  YIKES!  I hand pull out the algae from the sides where it tangles in the parrot feather and pull it off the waterfall rocks and for hard to reach areas I found a nice, long stick in the woods and use that to twirl it around and whip it onto the lawn.  I'm terrible at math and would be afraid to use peroxide.

Pond Chat / Re: How are the koi doing with the veggie dinner?
« on: August 10, 2009, 11:14:24 AM »
I feed my goldies peas.  I put some in a bowl and pour boiling water over them.  By the time the water cools they are ready.  I chop the peas into small pieces because my goldies are only about 3-4 inches.  Talk about being spoiled ;)  I'm going to have to try watermelon and squash.

Joyce,

Really, really beautiful.  Nice to have un-humid days, huh?

I have a newbie question.  My lily flowers never bloom above the water like yours do.  Are these special lilies like tropicals?

Pond Chat / Re: So, Tell Me How You Really Feel About Rocks!

You know, I was trying to match what you were saying to what I was seeing and couldn't figure it out until I realized this was sarcasm

I posted something that worked out great for my pond on another website and started a "posting war" I'm sure that was similar to your rock posting.  I still cringe when I think about it.

Anyway, what a absolutely beautiful pond.  I hope someday to get my plants growing close to the water and falling over the despicable(!) rocks like yours does.  And fabulous fish too.

Pond Chat / Re: what kind of biofilter media is best?
« on: August 06, 2009, 09:23:40 AM »
Ohhhh, FinnPond!  What an absolutely great idea.  My Savio waterfall filter came with long, long, thin, green plastic string-like things which is all I've ever used.  That tulle stuff would be so much easier to deal with.     I'll be making a trip to Joann's real soon ;)

I can't see any problem either.  You could shovel some of the dirt off the berms and use the dirt to cover the bright blue (!) swimming pool liner.   And the different water levels would work out fine for the lillies, hyacyinth's and any extra marginals.  Look on the bright side.  You won't have to use the hose to fill it.  FREE WATER 8-)~

Pond Chat / Re: has anybody had a normal summer....
« on: July 30, 2009, 11:46:10 AM »
Up here in Massachusetts June had only THREE, that is three days of sunshine.  Way below normal temps and it rained and rained and rained.   There are slugs everywhere and they are even crawling in the middle of the lawn which I've never seen before.  All the strawberries rotted.  July is just stating to be hot and it is the last week of the month.  My water lettuce and hyacinths just started taking off along with the string algae!  This is the worst summer I can remember :(

Pond Chat / Re: What is the most you've paid for a water lily?
« on: July 30, 2009, 05:52:59 AM »
This was my first year ponding and since I didn't know anything about anything I paid $49.00 for a hardy lilly at a nursery that sells pond plants.  I don't even know what kind it is  :-\

Pond Chat / Re: Anyone use "Aqua One Pond Clarifer"?
« on: July 28, 2009, 05:17:10 AM »
I have a bottle of the stuff sitting on my coffee table for the past 4 months and I've never used it.  I really didn't want to use any chemicals as this was my first pond.   The pond just had its first birthday and the water is crystal clear (if a little brown!).  I think, and will swear by this,  it is the cotton batting I have in the skimmer and bio filter.   It collects alot of brown stuff which I rinse off every day.   I've been doing this since March and I've never had the algae bloom I've read about on here and the water stays so clear I can see the fishies' shadows on the bottom of the pond.

Pond Chat / Re: Another idea to cover the skimmer
« on: July 23, 2009, 09:07:10 AM »
I really like this idea.  I have 2 chairs by the pond, in the grass, as close to the pond as I can get.  I'm now thinking I may have to "suggest" to DH that a deck might be a good idea too.  I'm sure he will be thrilled

Here's my special boy Tom.  I just happened to snap his picture as he was licking his nose!  The pond is barely visible in the background.

« on: July 22, 2009, 01:21:59 PM »
I cannot take the credit for this idea.  {:-P;;    I saw it on (ahem) another pond website but I loved it so much I nagged DH to make me one.  Its a miniature "dock".  The middle part comes out so I don't have to lift the whole thing.  I tried making a fake rock but it came out terrible.

Also, I wanted to thank TIMGOD for posting exact instructions for posting pictures.  This is my very first success at posting pictures.  Get ready for my pond pictures.

Pond Chat / Re: Regarding Dragonfly's
« on: July 01, 2009, 11:48:28 AM »
I love dragonflies.  o(:-)   If you hold out your fingers sometimes they will land on your hand to rest their wings.   When I mow the lawn they follow me because they are catching the bugs the mower scares up in the air.   They will not harm your plants.  Not sure about the larvae but the dragonfly itself is harmless.
