Thanks! I actually found it online the on the other night - it's called Sparaxis, and grows from corms planted in fall.

Here is a piece of wood I found in Yellowstone that I was going to use for a succulent arrangement.

Then, after a visit to a local Spring Gardening show I was able to purchase 5 air plants at a great price, I decided to put 4 of them into this piece of wood.  They just rest in the cavity since I need to soak the air plants once every few weeks in the pond.

Beautiful!

Chit Chat / Will they survive?

My husband found this nest in a hanging pot INSIDE our shed this morning. The mama is able to get inside under the overhang of the shed. He moved it outside in the same spot, because he was afraid the babies might not figure out how to get out when they are flight ready. I so hope the mama finds the nest and continues to raise them.  :-\

I was thinking they might be downy woodpecker eggs due to the black and white striped feathers in the nest, but a google image search shows they are tufted titmouse eggs. That makes sense, as I did see a titmouse take some of the cat fur that I put out on the deck for them the other day. But why would there also be the black and white feathers?

I soooo hope these babies make it!  O0

My new leaves are also very skinny on 2 plants, LuAnn! I got a cutting last summer from a friend here in NY who says his very large plant flowers all the time, and everyone he's given cuttings to also flower. I had it outside all summer and it formed a bud, but it fell off after a few days of rain. That plant has been inside my kitchen all winter by a western facing window. It has a very long but skinny leaf. I wonder if it has to do with both of us living in zone 6? I am going to put it back outside now that the overnight temps are starting to warm up again. We had 32 for 2 nights this week - record breaking lows for May!

Gorgeous! Sooooo jealous here!

I have a few cuttings indoors, from a friend in Texas for about 5 years now and not a single bud nor bloom. One is finally growing nicely now but still no bud. What could I be doing for them to encourage them to flower here in zone 6?

I love the first 2 pictures in this thread - such simple designs, yet so very nice! Gave me some good ideas of what to do with succulents - I am a sucker for hens and chicks and have a few varieties.

Such pretty colors together! Mine are in full bud and about to bloom, but for the freezing temps we are supposed to get tonight. :-\

Very nice pictures of beautiful flowers, Kat!

I just bought a vey tiny Black Gamecock at Lowes yesterday. It was the only container that had a bit of green leaves - maybe 3 thin leaves that are about 3 inches high. I am wanting to put it in a pot on a shelf in my pond. I've read online that they like water to be around 3 inches over the top of the pot, but here I am reading that you keep it with just wet feet? Do you know if they would be ok with water over the top? That would be the better situation for my pond.

I also need to know if I can submerge the pot over winter, as the entire surface of the pond freezes. I've read where 1 person's rhizome froze solid but it came back well the next year, but if possible I'd like to submerge it where the water does not freeze.

Thanks for any help!

Koi Corner / blue koi <3
« on: September 21, 2012, 08:14:32 AM »
I have a strong love for blue koi. I discovered that a pond store nearby sells them, and I now have six. I had 2 more last year, but the heron >:(- got one last spring and the fall before.  They really are these blue colors - no photoshopping or enhancing.  I so wish they would have babies next year - fingers crossed but so far I haven't had any koi babies, just a very few comets.

Thanks for the grub! 8)

See our pretty colors?  ;)

Divided we conquer! O0

You go that way... I'll go this way!

Yummy! ;D

We also have it on the waterfall rocks. As of last summer, our solution is to turn off the running water, pour hydrogen peroxide on it, and let it sit for a while - it kills the algae, turning it black, which is then taken to the filters.  We are needing to do that again today - waterfall rolls are pretty green.

Beautiful. I also had one for a few years, but had to overwinter it inside, and it got spider mites all over. I had to get rid of it.

I fear you are right Marilyn. I swear they all just had a growth spurt.
Funny because before we started this site I was ridiculed because I didn't have Koi!
Seems I now do.  Sure using a lot more food too.
Now what?  I think live and let live.

I like your attitude, Jerry! O0  You liked them before you knew they were koi, and they haven't changed, right? ;)

Beautiful flowers!

Now if you would just send a bit of that rain here, we'd be very grateful! They called for a thunderstorm here last night "in the wee hours of the night" with possible hail and strong thunder. NOPE! NADA! Not a drop! The grass is sooooo crunchy! :P

Great idea, Annette!  O0

I am sad to say that the calibrachoa is totally dead - it did NOT like being so wet at all. :-\

And... the hosta mostly burned out in my all day hot sun, and we've had little rain all month so far. I cut it way back last evening hoping that at least the ajuga will fill out and grow over the rim. Time will tell.

Still looking for suggestions for plants that will take these awful temps in the 90's and all day blaring sun?

I was going to say it looks like mildew to me - hard to tell in the picture really - it is listed in the link that Mikey posted.

WOW wonderful pictures of beautiful plants everyone! I was successful with them for 2 years when I was able to start them indoors in March, but haven't remembered to do that since.  They are not hardy here and there's no room indoors to overwinter them.

I will just live vicariously through all your pictures - keep them coming!

Just came in here first time today, and the boxes are still there upon opening the website. If I delete my cookies I will have to log into all of my sites again, and I don't remember all of the passwords - ACK!

thank you thank you for asking this! My husband just looked over at my computer when I signed in here and said "WHAT'S THAT?!?" I've been trying to get rid of it as well.

Uh oh - I just followed Sean's directions but I had already unchecked all of my boxes and I am still getting the scrolling black boxes each time I come into the forums?
