Pond Chat / Re: Heron Law Suit
« on: September 11, 2009, 08:56:36 PM »
Thanks all.
We're thinking of one of those tombstone motion activated ghouls. That'll give it a heart attack.

In the meantime, we have a raven dumby out there. My MadCam weather cam is set to alarm if it detects movement. So far, 1 day down; posse has come up empty.

Just added a 26' pergola stretching over patio and pond.

Koi Corner / Pond Temperature Regulation
« on: August 18, 2009, 08:05:10 AM »
Our pond is almost 2 mnths old. Our "No Shade" temps were getting upwards of 95F (mid-depth) w/ solar radiation >1300 w/m^2. Because of those temps, we delayed introducing fish.
To help regulate temps at mid-depth (15"), we added various lilies. After fanning out, covering roughly 1/3 surface, the mid-depth temps were significantly reduced, <93F with solar radiation still >1300 w/m^2. We have noticed our Koi and Shubies now come out of the "deep" to feed in the late morning.

After noticing higher solar radiation levels (in the morning) preceding the afternoon max pond temps, we planted 2 young 18' Weaping Willows 20' east of the pond, providing shade in the summer mornings, while allowing direct radiation in the winter.

Now we just have to wait for the willows to fan out.

Our max pond temp goal at 15" depth is <92F.

Pond Chat / Re: String algae
« on: August 10, 2009, 09:34:40 PM »
Before we added Koi (Draco Pond was just 2 wks old) we had a huge algae bloom, soup, along w/ SA. Added 32fl oz of 3% H2O2 to our 1300gal pond and it cleared w/in 1 day. Only had 5 diff lilly plants. Now treat w/ bacteria. The algae comes and goes, but SA under control.

I imagine things will change as the pond ages; < 2mnths old.
x4 Koi - 3"
x2 Shubunkin -3"

Came after the last 2 hard rains
x1 Bull Frog-George
X3 Squirrel Frogs-Bud, Wise, and Er (the slow one)
