Phenomenal use of small space, Kat.

Large (but not large enough!) mud pond:

How does Little Champion compare to Perry's Baby Red for you, Kat?

Great stuff - thanks for sharing.

That is some seriously impressive height above the water - bet it makes for a great display.

Working on F2's, yet?  I know you've mentioned you still have a ton of seeds to germinate and bring to size.

Our power company just sent us a flier yesterday for surge protection at the box for $2 a month.  You might see if yours offers the same thing.

Pond Chat / Re: What do I do with these plants?

Your iris should be fine.  The canna, you can dig up the tubers after you get a good killing frost, put them in a paper grocery bag and then set them in the basement, and they'll be good for planting next spring (and you'll probably have quite a few more than you had this year).  I'm not knowledgeable enough on the other two to comment.

I'm with you on thinking most "blue" lilies are purple.  Only one I have that I consider a real blue is a unnamed very light sky blue from Craig Presnell:

I really like  H X T 27-10.  Thanks for sharing.

Any interesting flower forms?  How about interesting pads?

A while back you mentioned trying to cross some aussies with hardies; any success with that so far?

Definitely not lazy.

You need to post the name of the lily, as others can help you with growth pattern and tips.  Some lilies take more time than others to really shine, or have certain requirements to make them look their best.  One lily that is a bit unique is Georgia Peach.  It starts very late, and is exceptionally leafy, which could lead a person to think it's not a good performer, but once it starts blossoming, it puts up tons of buds, and doesn't slow down - it just grows in a different way from many other lilies.

Very healthy lilies - well done.

How do you have your lilies potted/etc?  The three you posted as not doing well for you are all very vigorous growers.  Mayla is gigantic, and mexicana is so weedy it can take over a pond in less than a year (trust me, I know).

If all you're really interested in is covering the pond, you're not going to beat n. Mexicana.  Not very showy, but it's still a nice lily.  Get N. mexicana 'Cape Canaveral' for the same coverage, but more impressive blossoms.  Check state law first, as it's considered invasive in some places, as I recall.

Pond Chat / Re: Interesting hardy lily behaviour
« on: July 03, 2011, 09:33:49 AM »
It is a viviparous bloom, where a new plantlet forms from the blossom of an old bud (on hardies).  It's been documented in most hardies with mexicana heritage.  I let one develop on a Colorado for about a month last year, and then successfully transplanted it.  I found when it was attached to the mother plant, it often had more blossoms than pads.

Australia has some of the strictest rules on the planet in regards to import/export of biological specimen, so I honestly doubt you'll find out anything positive on this subject.

Latour-Marliac supplied Monet with the aquatic plants for his water garden, which inspired his famous paintings.  Marliac sold him some lotus, too, but they didn't take.
