I just purchased an Aquadyne 4.4 C filter with a blower for my pond   ( 3000 gal ) .  I am using a Sequence Pro  pump 1/3 hp  along with a Aqua Sterilizer  80 watt.    Does anyone have a filter  similiar to this and if so  could you send me a pic of the piping schematics ?  I  tried Aquadyne manuel but was not much help.  I know the basics but would like some imput from someone who is using one.  Any help with valves etc would definitely help.     Thanks

No : It was never submerged.  after 6 months it stoped working.  Both sets of batteries were changed and nothing.  So i called customer relations and they said warrenty was only for 30 days.  They also said that model they were having problems with and a better one is coming out soon.  They simply said   " tough luck "  so I through everything in the trash and am moving on.  I will say when it did work it was very nice especially in the winter when you could see your water temp inside the house.   Thanks for your help.

I am looking for advice on a good pond theromoter that has a proven track record.  I have been through 2 of them ( Ambient Weather ) and   ( ???? ) and both were no good.   I am looking for one that floats in the pond and a remote that reads the temp in doors.  If someone could give me some advice on a good one or a webbsite I would greatly appreciate it.    Thanks for your trouble

Can anyone tell me what to spray on my lily leaves as they are being eaten by a catapillar.  I have never seen this before.  Can I use liquid 7?   I also have a lot of koi so I need to be cautious.   Thanks.

Jerry;  Yes I have Stenosis and because of that I had to have L-4  and L-5 fused.   That was 5 years ago.  Operation went great but due to Stenosis I still have some back pain in the morning until I get moving.  What I did find helpful was changing over to a " Sleep Number "  matress and keeping the matress very firm around 95--100.    This made a world of difference for me.   I do not take any pain medication.   Hope this helps.

Pond Chat / Re: pond edge? Paver bricks?
« on: April 19, 2012, 03:22:46 AM »
Pavers are the way to go.  My pond has large stones around the outside perimeter 18" high and the pavers butt into it.  Works out great.    Prep for the pavers is dig down 6" below final grade ( grass )  Tamp dirt well.  Install 4" stone dust  ( crushed stone ) tamp again. Install pavers , tamp and brush sand mixture in all joints.  I live in Md. with cold winters and this works out great.  Hope this helps

Pond Chat / Re: Koi growth
« on: January 14, 2012, 05:03:37 AM »
I have all butterfly koi in a 3000 gal pond.  In mid June ( last year ) I noticed there were babies swimming around.  I left them in the pond until Sept and then removed 6 of them to a 20 gal Aquarium for the winter inside.   I wanted to watch their growth.  Well now they are 4-4 1/2 " and growing quick.  I only feed them once a day.   It won't be long before they will outgrow the aquarium.

The trees here in MD have started turning colors, however, our temps are still in the uppers 70's and yesterday it was in the 80's.  I'm thinking I have 2-3 more weeks before I will have to get the netting out...but I need to make room in the house for my pond plants!

Just saw your post and thought I would say hey.  I am from Fallston, Md.   Been ponding for 2 years and really love this site.  It has really helped me out a lot.  Take care ... Talk to you soon.

Pond Chat / Covering pond for the winter
« on: September 06, 2011, 05:19:53 AM »
I have decided to cover my pond ( 10'x 15' ) this winter with reinforced poly to help keep the leaves and debris out.  The pond is 3' deep and I will be running the pump through the waterfall as I did last year.  It will also have a heater in the pond.  I will have a 3'x3' access hole in the plastic to monitor what is happening throughout the winter.  My questions are :
Would it be better to remove the pump and install an aerator maybe with 2 outlets for oxegen or use both incase one fails ?     Also I have been told that the plastic cannot be air tight because you need to have a way for gases to escape.  Please advise as this is my first time covering my pond.     Thanks

Koi Corner / Koi eating water lettuce.
« on: September 06, 2011, 04:36:47 AM »

I have had water lettuce in my pond all summer to help with the algae and for shade and it has done a great job for keeping the water clear.  My koi did not fool with it all summer.  It grew to a point that I had to remove a 5 gal bucket every other day which was no problem. However in the past 2 weeks they have completely destroyed it to a point it is almost gone.  My question is, why would they now decide to eat it when all summer they did not touch it ? Is it because they were not getting enough to eat.  They eat like pigs.  Also , is there any floating plant that will control algae that they will not bother ?   Thanks for your help

I have used the PVC ribbon material for the first time  this year in a bio and it works great.  Cleaned it one time with a garden hose and it was very easy to clean.   I think it is the best.  Here is  the link.   Maryland Aquatic Nurseries   WWW.aqua-link.com

« on: July 17, 2011, 08:27:46 AM »

If you are looking for large growth habit hardies these are some:

Perry's Orange Sunset, Perry's Double Yellow, Sunny Pink, Pink Grapefruit, Lily Pons, Mayla, Mangkala Ubol, Pink Ribbon, Almost Black

Tropicals:
Foxfire, Wood's Blue Goddess, N. gigantea, Alexis, Southern Charm, Blue Star, nightbloomers, Albert Greenberg, Caliente, Avalanche, Midnight Embers, Midnight Serenade, Blink, Pamela, Miami Rose, Panama Pacific

Good luck.           I am also looking for cover in my pond.  I have 2 Charlene Strawn  and 1Red
Spider but they seem to stay more compact.  They are set at 18" below the
water.  Is that too deep.    I will definitely try some of yours.   Thanks for
                          the info.

yes, a heron can stab a lift a fish that size, if they can't they just stab it behind the eye and leave it for dead.

My koi pond stays netted after losing one that size.
Thanks for the info.  I am really attached to these fish so when that happened it is really upsetting.  I will take your advice and install a net.

I've had egrets and green herons visit my pond close enough I could see their beady eyes!  My ponds are now netted, heavily, but they still come to view my feeshies!  Luckily no losses.

Hopefully your fish is hiding really well.  I would think these herons and egrets can reach down and catch an innocent swimmer at a very far depth.

Koi Corner / Butterfly koi 10 " disappesared
« on: March 07, 2011, 05:08:02 AM »
As spring is nearing here in Md I can not wait to get working outside with my pond.  This is only my first spring so I am really excited about getting it planted.  My pond is 2800 gal , 3' deep with a small 1' plant shelf.    I have 15 butterfly koi in the pond and I watch them every day slowing starting to wake up from winter.  My question is :  the biggest and prettiest koi has just disappeared from the pond.  This fish was aleast 10".    Is a blue heron capable of getting such a large fish out of the pond?    Due to winter these fish are on the bottom and even if it stood on the shelf, it wood still have to reach 2' into the pond.   Is this possible ? How about a racoon?   Will a heron come within 10' of my house ?   If so he may be in trouble.       Any help would be appreciated    Thanks      Still learning
