Aquatic and Terrestrial Plant Exchange / Water hyacinth needed
« on: May 18, 2013, 03:31:24 PM »
Does anybody have water hyacinth for sale? I just need a couple for my filter.
Thanks,
Eija

We also have tons of cicadas on our yard. They completely cover the trees and the grass. My flower pots are full of "shells".  >:(- It's starting to smell like rotting bugs too. My 4-yr old is freaked out and won't go outside much.
The only good thing about them is that I don't have fill my bird feeders at all; the birds are not even coming to the feeders.

Hi again Lawanna!
I'd like one of these, if still available.

Pond Chat / Re: Waterfall rebuilding done, leak fixed
« on: May 28, 2008, 07:39:58 AM »
I usually put just a few impatiens in the waterfall, they spread like crazy. This year, I added a few extra since the waterfall is bigger @O@
I don't have any "sharp root" trees around the pond, just your regular Ohio ash trees and such. There were a couple holes in the liner and the roots had gone through it behind the waterfall.  I have huge trees though.
My skippy and the waterfall are in afternoon sun. I never got them to grow in the skippy, just in the waterfall.

Here's a pic from last year with the impatiens filling the waterfall. The grow wild in the water!

Pond Chat / Waterfall rebuilding done, leak fixed

Our little pond was loosing water slowly last summer and the leak was worse this spring. It turned out that darn tree roots had poked all kinds of holes in the liner. So, the waterfall had to come down. My husband rebuilt it, bigger of course.  It sounds wonderful!  Here are before and after pics. I just planted some impatiens in-between the rocks to soften the look a bit. Once they grow, they'll cover most of the waterfall.

Thanks Lawanna!  @O@ @O@

Mine doesn't make it through the winter. I have a small pond, so a few bunches would be enough.

Pond Chat / Hello everyone!
« on: April 01, 2008, 08:36:45 AM »
I've posted in the past but had a slow year last year.  I was pregnant with #3 and didn't do much with the pond. Now I'm staying home this summer and have new energy for ponding.  I had a baby girl in January (girl #3) and have been waiting for spring to arrive.  I just walked up to the pond for the first time in about 6 months and I have some work to do! Anyway, just wanted to say hi! 8)

That was cool! 8)  I want to try that with my frogs.
What kind of camcorder do you have?  I'm looking into getting a HD camcorder.

Pond Chat / Another bird attack! Feel like giving up
« on: May 21, 2007, 06:02:19 AM »
 >:( >:( >:( >:(
Last Friday I went to check on my fishies, haven't seen them for a while since it's cool here at night.  They've been hiding on the bottom.  Looked and looked, only found one of my 5 comets.  Also, saw a feather floating. Nothing else disturbed, not even a pot turned.  My pond is small, about 5x6 feet, 20 inches deep. I have good coverage with huge trees over the pond. A bird of some sort must have gone in and taken 4 comets.... :'( :'( :'( :'(
This happened to me before, two years ago in the winter when the pond was bare with no leaf coverage.  Didn't expect any problems with all the lily pads covering the surface, cinder blocks I have for hiding places and the trees.
Keeping the pond covered year round is not an option, I'd rather not have any fish.
so...I don't know what to do.  I guess I give up keeping goldfish. Thinking about just getting a couple of minnows.

Oh no Bonnie!
I'm so sorry to hear this!  I hate raccoons, our house is surrounded by woods as well and the little rascals have been around many times. Last year one of them had six babies and they kept going through our garbage until we put all 4 cans in the garage.  >:(- >:(-
This year, they have magically disappeared. I hope they stay away...

Bonnie,
Just let me know when/if you have any fishies for me... No rush,
Eija

Here's mine:

Pics from last year. The first one must be a pic from early summer, maybe late May.  The second pics shows how big the impatients got in the waterfall.

Thanks Dave,
My tubers look really good, firm and fat. 8)  I'll give them more time. This is my first year with lotus, so I really want them to do well.  :-\

Pond Chat / lotus leaves turning black
« on: May 03, 2007, 04:30:13 PM »
Well, my lotus plants made it through the cold snap.  They look like they are all growing. The problem is that the baby leaves turn black as soon as they start opening. All three are potted in pots outside the pond, in full sun. I potted them using store bought well-composted manure and topsoil.  Added some Osmocote.
They have healthy looking growth tips.  Could they still be recovering from the cold weather? They were covered when it went down to 30's (we had some nights with 20's).  Now it's been warm, highs in the 70-80's and lows in the 50-60's.

Pond Chat / Re: Any ponders want goldfish or shubunkins?
« on: April 26, 2007, 05:53:48 PM »
Hi Bonnie!
I'm meaning to email you.  I only have 4 goldies in my pond.  Would love to get about 5-10 shubunkins.  I wish I had a pond big enough for 100! :o :o :o
I'm in West Chester (20 min North of downtown Cincinnati).
Just let me know when I can come over 8) 8) 8)

Mine has never made it through winter in my shallow pond (about 18 inches); I cut it really short in the fall and there is nothing left in the spring. In the summer it grows so huge I have to keep cutting it.
Does anyone have any extra they could spare for postage or a small fee?
Thanks,
Eija  :)

23
I'd like 5 of each, please.  I'll PM you :-)

I have a small pond and the water temp is 65 right now. The water hyacinths go on top of the skippy where the sun heats the water even warmer.  Cool night temps swing the water temp a bit.  I put mine in around Mother's Day last year and they did fine. I get just a few and if the night temp goes too low, I move them in the garage for the night.

Eija:-)

For all you warm climate dwellers: I would love to buy some water hyacinths for my biofilter. Since they grow like weeds, just a few would be enough. Every fall, I have to compost mine, too cold here in the winter  :-\
Thanks,
Eija (backyardponder)

Pond Chat / Cold weather next weekend - what to do with lotus?
« on: April 02, 2007, 07:11:53 AM »
Heeelp! :-\

It's been really warm here (mid 70's to 80's) but the weather is going to turn cold on Wednesday and the high temp. on Saturday is supposed to be 40 F :o :o
I've potted my lotus, one in a ceramic pot that can be moved and the other in a whiskey barrel that is way too heavy to lift. They are both looking good and I can see roots coming out.  Are they going to be ok? :-\
It's supposed to go back to mid-50's by next week.
Thanks,
Eija

Pond Chat / Re: Water Changing Question?
« on: March 30, 2007, 08:55:50 PM »
Well, back to the original question, are water changes needed if "your water is clear, and all vitals are good why do I need to do so many or at all?
I know topping off is not a water change. But if you only have a few fish in your pond and have no problems with ammonia, nitrates, etc, doesn't that mean your biofilter is doing what it's supposed to do? It just depends on your set-up
I never pump water out either. In the summer, the pond needs an occasional top-off and that seems to be almost once a week.
