For those of you trying to decide if you want to pay to go to the Friday night event, here is a photo taken by our great friend Noriyuki Kato at the 2010 event.
He is not a mere photographer but more of an artist and he captured the magic of that night digitally like catching a bolt of lightning.

« on: July 22, 2012, 07:29:52 PM »
Yes they can bloom with 5 or more pads.
The more pads the better in all cases.
Once they turn yellow and begin to degrade though you get to a point of loss of return so when they turn yellow or ratty just cut them off.
I see you are in Texas. With our heat, they metabolize through fertilizer faster.
Hardies like to go to sleep in July or August anyway unless you re-feed them here.
If they are tropicals, they should really perk up in hot weather although extreme water temps can adversely affect the flowers.

If I know what seed it is, I watch the pads. I really like different and interesting pads.
Sometimes the vigorous ones grow quick and make the choice for me.

It is a true dark pink/red like Bull's Eye but with the shape and petal count of Ultra Violet.
It will be one of the two new items released by F.A.N. next year.

Very nice Sean.
I too had it once but lost it to a combination of a hard winter (for us that means getting into the teens) and voracious spring caterpillars.
I lost both of my red ones that year too.

On this one I stopped guessing.
I don't know if you are referring to my comment about the shape or you have seen this on Facebook.

I think now that it is mature the shape is somewhat stable however the color is a whole different matter.
This was a blue lily last year as a juvenile. It was a blue lily in April, May and June of this year... take a look at these shot of what it looked like before we started getting really hot.

No photoshop B.S. here.
No change in pot, no fertilizer change, only new condition is heat.
I actually liked it better blue but either way it is cool. The white inner sepals and stamen make it's color pop.

I thought I would update you on this flower from a couple years ago.
I named it officially in a ceremony at LilyFest last year in honor of my mom.
Here is Nymphaea 'Laura Lee'
You'll notice that in the 1st image it is nearly as big as the Australians.
The bloom in the next 2 shots was about 11 inches across and the pads were 18 - 20 inches.
The adult dragonfly can give you a bit of the scope of the bloom.
