DIY Corner / Painted DOW blue board styrofoam?
« on: November 02, 2011, 04:15:16 PM »
Has any of you ever painted or put spackling or cement type stucco to the DOW blue board insulation styrofoam?  It's at Lowes.  Home Depot has the Pink kind.

If so, what did you use and how has it held up on the outside?

Reedman, where did you get the bendable lattice?  Does it come in wood colors, or just white?

Pond Construction & Filtration / Dress up a Stock Tank???
« on: October 08, 2011, 04:03:50 PM »
So I "pulled the trigger" and got a 6 foot diameter stock tank 2 foot deep for my watergarden/pond.  I want to dress it up to not LOOK like a stock tank.  I would like to (of course), do these as cheap as possible without it LOOKING cheap. :search:

I have thought of paint, but that isn't my first choice.  Another choice is tile?  But would it stick, and that could get pricey.  Next would be the landscape retaining wall rocks, but that might be a little too pricey too.

Then of course building some type of wooden structure, but then I'd have to figure out how to dress THAT up

What do ya'll suggest?

Ok ya'll, what type of paint and/or procedures do you recommend to paint the outside (or inside?) of a galvanized steel stock tank?  I am having it totally above ground.  I don't MIND the steel look per se, but want to jazz it up, or tone it down as the case may be  8)
I have seen and have directions on how to paint a galvanized steel TRASH CAN with decorative paint, but I want to paint the whole outside of tank, and don't know the durability of the above technique for the entire tank over the long haul.
I even thought of maybe adhering plaster of something on it to make it look like rock or stucco?  Suggestions?

I went to a local water garden supplier today and watched a demo on different ways to construct a pond, and the lecturer suggested using a double wooden wall for my particular case..... not permanent, on a concrete porch, raised.  Anyway have any detailed construction advice?

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and advice.  Pond Nut, your pictures are great!  I'm not sure of the permanence of a pond though, because if we ever move again, I don't want to have to leave it behind    I did that once before and it made me sad  :'(. We are going today to a pond place to look at some more possible options.  Another reason behind not wanting to put in yard is we would have to have a major redo of our sprinkler system, and that is not an option to me.
I'll keep you all updated to what I do!

I am getting very frustrated with my "design ideas".  What I want, and what I think I can do, with respect to the porch seems futile.  I just DO NOT want to put the pond outside.  Seriously, we live by a lake and already have way too many water snakes, and copperheads that manage to make it into our yard.  I have talked to our builder and the porch should be plenty adequate to hold a pond of the size I want.

Pond Chat / Local Fish Store and Pond(s) supplies - Lake Conroe TX area
« on: September 06, 2011, 07:08:02 PM »
I am looking for Pond and Fish stores close to me.  I know of Fish R Us on 242.  Nelsons in Katy (though that is pretty far for me).  What other place do ya'll know of to find good fish, koi, ponds, pond supplies..... the whole shebang  @O@   Any mail order that you believe are reputable with shipping live fish if necessary, or just otherwise an awesome resource?

I want to site a koi pond on my existing concrete patio. It is topped with patterned concrete also. Is there a concern for cracking the concrete? I would like to put about a 10 foot x 5 foot x 3 foot deep (at deepest). Would like to find a preformed pond, but don't think they make them that deep? The total porch is 12' deep by over 100' long, so this would be in a corner area with a stucco wall at the back, glass windows at 2' above floor on another side, and the third side is screen, as the whole area is screened in. It also does not get much sun except in the afternoon.
I want it at this location because we live by a lake and I don't want to deal with snakes, herons, racoons and other critters taking a dip. Any suggestions on any aspect of this project? And I have had ponds before, just not koi, or on a porch. o(
