Pond Chat / koi to large for pond
« on: April 26, 2008, 07:01:01 AM »
o( I have a beautiful white and black Fancy Koi. It's approximately 20" long and has the most gorgeous long fluttering fins I have ever seen. Unfortunately it is getting to large for my 8'x10' pond. It would be devestating to find Spotty a new home but it's an injustice keeping it in our 8'x10' pond. It's approx 4 yrs old. It's our baby but it needs more room to swim and play. Does anyone know how I can go about selling Spotty? Please any help would be appreciated
Thanks

Pond Chat / light bulbs
« on: October 24, 2007, 06:09:43 PM »
Instead of bringing my Koi indoors this winter, my DH is building a green house dome over the pond (the fish are getting to large for the stock tank). He is planning on heating the dome with light bulbs. Our biggest concern is stopping the bulbs from shattering if they come in contact with a splash of water. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to protect the bulb from breakage or the broken pieces falling in the pond?
Thanks for any in put. I have always gotten fantastic advice from all of you

Pond Chat / Re: winterizing structures
« on: September 25, 2007, 05:37:21 PM »
Preplexed,
I'm also seeking the solution for a easy to build frame so I can keep my plants and fish toasty all winter long. In previous years, I over wintered my larger Koi in a 100 gallon stock tank, located in my basement. The fish are to large for this. Any suggestion with pictures would be greatful.
Thanks,
Pam

 >:( yep, I'm sooooo sick of the cold. With the ice off the pond and the Koi swimming it must be spring. Unfortunately not yet! Everyday I look at the pond dreaming of warm weather, a cold beer and the sun in my face. AHHHHHH can't wait.

Pond Chat / Re: Have you ever had a heron visit at this time?
« on: March 08, 2007, 03:49:43 PM »
Nice Heron! I had a visitor a fews years back but this did the trick. When you're able to run a hose to your pond, you have to buy what is called a "scare crow". It is actived by movement causing a three second spray to be released from its nozzle. It works on Herons, pets (my dog thinks its a game) and off course people! It can be a little percarious to set the correct nozzle flow but once you have it, it works great

I have hardy lillies that are in desperate need of repotting this spring. My yard has very, very sandy soil. My rhizomes have completly taken over their containers. I need new clay soil. What can I substitute for the clay. I was told never to use "potting soil" due to algea problems that will encure. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Again, I know this is not to keep a child "OUT" of the pond. When my childern were young (thru their adult hood) we had a pool. Yes, I do know to teach pond safety. It's just there for a small reminder. I showed my husband a picture and he is already planning his design. He already stated he wants to cement the poles intothe ground do to our sandy soil.

Esther, Thanks for the offer of sending me some Ajuga. They really are lovley. How do you ship something like that. I have some pond plants that I would love to give away. I don't know the names of any of then. I'll have to investigate the pond exchange forum.
Thanks again for all of your input

What a wonderful idea. The fencing really does look great and the lights would add even more.  I already saved your pics for my spring project (well, with a lot of help from my husband).

Esther, Thank you, Thank you!!!! Yes, that is exactly what I'm looking for. As a grandmother my family would NEVER leave a toddler outdoors with out close adult supervision. I live in a suburb of Detroit. We have a small fenced yard. Safety is ALWAYS our first concern. Esther, your suggestion is  just what my mind ordered.
Thank You again,
Pam

Thank you for the suggestions. The stake rope thing sounds like a fantastic idea! Esther, would you have a photo of this? I know we'll keep a close eye on the little one but it's just one more step in safety.
Thanks Again

Hi everyone! I've been with your group for many a year (prior chat room with many of you). I have received so much information from this group in the past, I know someone will help me with my new problem.
I've been ponding for 8 years and it has given our family great joy until now. We just had our first grandchild and she will be walking this summer. My pond has brick pavers coming right up to the waters edge. The ground by the pond in very stabel. What can I use to protect FAST little feet from going into the pond? Any suggestions on what type of decorative fencing is out there? Please help before spring is upon me. Thanks!
