I am using pond water because I thought it would have more natural food sources for them at this young stage. Do you feed brine shrimp? I read somewhere that fry need live food to thrive. The last time I tried this, 2 years ago, I had them outside in a 150 gallon stock tank with plants and filter and they just didn't seem to grow very well. I lost quite a few when about an inch long. I frequently checked the water for ammonia and nitrates and it was fine. It was very discouraging. They are just starting to free swim now. Such cute little buggers!

Thanks for the advice. It means a lot that you like my wakin. I have drooled over yours more than once. :) Tell me, are all of your babies "pond raised"? I have to pull my eggs and separate them or they seem to get eaten. I have a 10 gallon with 4 day old fry right now. Would you happen to know of any good links, articles, books etc. on raising fry?
Thanks again for all your help.

Not sure if this will help at all, but here are some pics I took last night. She wasn't very cooperative about holding still :)

I am using aquarium salt. I followed the box. Two rounded tablespoons in 10 gallons.

Hey all,
One of my wakin developed a fungal infection. There was a lot of stringy, cottony stuff sticking out from both sides of her body. I removed her from pond, put her in salted water, started treatment with fungal cure (acrifavine). I also started feeding medicated food. After full course of treatment, according to the directions, she is looking better, there is still some cottony stuff, but it isn't as stringy and it is much shorter. I am still keeping her in salted water and feeding med food. She is much more active and eating well. Should I treat her again? Try a different medication? I'm just not sure where to go from here. Anyone have any thoughts? I love my wakins and I would hate to lose her.
Thanks,

Hey,
I lost one of my big orfe this spring and am looking to get some more. Does anyone know of an online supplier that has orfe? Or does anyone have some they would like to sell? I'm in the Lansing, MI area.
Thanks,
Kay

They are doing great! Still small, maybe 3/4 to an inch long. No color has developed yet. I have them all outside in a 150 horse trough. I find it very hard to get a decent picture of them. But I shall keep trying.

I am in Eaton Rapids, which is southwest of Lansing. Caledonia is about an hour west of me. Nice to talk to other Michiganders!

Hey,
Whereabouts in Michigan are you? I am in MI also and I have lots of Wakin babies. They are very tiny at this point, but they are growing. You are right. They are impossible to find anywhere around here. I have on occasion found them at Apol's Landscape in Caledonia, MI.

I'm so sorry! That must be so frustrating. But I'm glad you told us about it. I have a bunch of baby Wakin, which I have worked hard to get and raise. I probably would have put them in with the big guys at that size. I won't now. They will just have to stay in the horse trough for awhile. Thanks for the info!

The babies are growing! So cute! So far I haven't seen any that don't have the split tail. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with all these fish if they all live. I am a member of a local pond club, and as far as I know, no one else has wakins. So maybe I'll be able to find homes for some that way. They are more aggressive with their eating now. I put a glob of string algae in from the outdoor pond and they love it. Lots of little natural things for them to eat, I guess. When it warms up a little more I plan to move them outside to a 150 gallon stock tank. Hopefully they will grow a little faster that way.  o(

Here is a picture of my babies! Not a great one. They are so tiny. I can see the tails now, how cool! Can you tell I'm excited?

To those who asked, yes, each $10 shipment would have 2 tubers. I will get some pics of the tubers on my lunch today and get them posted. This is a picture of "Sunflower". It has smaller tubers, but is a very prolific bloomer and grower. I will try to find a picture of the unknown pink. It was labeled double rose when we bought it. But it isn't double. So I'm not sure what it is.

This is the first time I've tried to post a picture. I hope it works. If not check later, I'll figure it out.
Thanks

We finished splitting, arghhh! Can't stand up straight anymore. Anyway, we have some extra tubers because we ran out of pots. I will sell for $10.00 with $10.00 shipping. Most of these will have 2 tubers. I have 4 of the Sunflower, which is a lite pink. I can e-mail you a picture if you want. They will have 5-7 growing points. I have 2 Mrs. Perry D. Slocum, each shipment will have 2 tubers with 6-8 total points. I have 3 of an unknown pink. Each will have 2 tubers with about 6 points. And I have 1 completely unknown. This will have 2 tubers with a combined total of 14 growing points! Please e-mail me with any questions. I do accept paypal.

Hi,
I'll attempt to take some pictures. They are so tiny. I've been trying to see their tails every day, actually, multiple times a day, I check. They are about a week and a half old now, so I guess it will take another week or so. Hindsight being what it is; I wished I'd put them in a larger container that I could just raise the water level on. I'm going to have to move them in a week or so. It's hard to even do a water change when they are so small. I can't imagine trying to move them. This is a very fun, learning experience!

Thanks, that does help. I thought about giving them brine shrimp, but wasn't sure they would be able to eat it. Now I will give it a shot. I can't wait to see their tails! I keep thinking I should get a magnifying glass so I can see them. I didn't think about some of them growing faster and eating others, but it makes sense. I'm glad you mentioned it. I will keep an eye out for the "biggies", and move them when necessary. Thanks again. I appreciate it.  :)

Wakin, Shubunkins and Goldfish... / raising wakin goldfish
« on: April 16, 2007, 10:00:45 AM »
Hi all,
I have, finally, by using a spawning mop got some eggs that have hatched from my wakins.  @O@ Anyone have any tips or hints on raising many goldfish at a time? Right now I have them in about 3-4" of water with a sponge filter. I still have the spawning mop in with them (they are about 4 days old). I am feeding them hikari first bites three times a day. I do a small water change every day, with a turkey baster, and replace the water with filtered pond water from the adults tank. They are eating and swimming, so tiny! Any suggestions?
