Pond Chat / Re: I thought ducks were herbivores!
« on: March 30, 2008, 11:17:45 AM »
Hi Maryvonne - Looks like you have a Hooded Merganser pair. The male with its crest lowered. My book says that they are uncommon; in wooded lakes and streams. They are fish eating diving ducks with a long thin bill serrated on the sides. Not something you want to stay around your pond :o Better keep Jack handy!

Pond Chat / Re: What do you do for your pond when spring rolls around?
« on: March 30, 2008, 10:53:49 AM »
I am sort of in the same boat as Steve and Marla - still have ice and a bit of snow on top of the pond. As soon as the ice is gone I will get my hubby to put on his dry suit and get him in the pond to raise the plants so they will get a bit of a head start. I will supervise of course :). Some leaves will have to be scooped out as well this year because the snow came before I could get them all raked up. The pump and filters will also be started - hopefully with no leaks!

I also received a Colorado in a trade from Maryvonne last year. (Thanks again Mayvonne  :)).  It did really well and, although I can't see any lilies yet under the ice and snow, from the sounds of things I may have to repot it again this spring  O0

Love the arbor, Jerry. The rose is just gorgeous :)

Tim, sorry about your greenhouse and hope you get that beautiful Wisteria back up. I've heard that they are a very tough (strong) vine. I think that long-term you will need a new arbor with a cement footing like myguynmkoi mentioned. Good luck!

Very pretty! Too bad they don't last a bit longer. I'd be sorry to see them go too.

We're about the same as emm here too. Just to be on the safe side I try and wait till June 1 to plant most things but usually the last week in May is okay. I envy all of you who have much longer growing seasons.

You've got a real tropical paradise there, Jerry. You wont have long to wait now!
I would say that in 2 months I might be able to see my pond again not just the pond deicer poking out of the ice and snow :)

What do you do with your turtles during your "winter"?

Hi Tinkster! Happy New Year. Hope you are feeling well. It'll be more than 3 months until ponding weather arrives here too. I heard on a weather report yesterday that we have already had more snow this winter than in the last 3 winters combined! At least it's good for the perennials. Here's to a great ponding/gardening season in 2008.

Pond Chat / Re: Winter frustrations....
« on: November 25, 2007, 05:53:29 PM »
Hi Goldenangel
I am also in zone 5 and we haven't had any snow yet but have had some good freezes. I usually leave my net on all winter because we have oak trees that drop their leaves very late. If I'm lucky I can get them raked up before it snows but some years I can't. I any case there are often many leaves still blowing around most of the winter so I just leave the net on the pond. Still waiting for those leaves to come down this year :)
Hope you get to spend more time with your pond next year!

Jerry, I use shade fabric for a pond cover too. Not sure what percent though. I find that it's very good for keeping out the smallest stuff - even spruce needles!

I remember Gene giving me helpful advice when I was picking out a pump for my pond.
So sorry to hear about your wife, Gene. My prayers are with you and your family at this time.

The Turkey was great but the leftovers tonight were even better I think.  Our weather was above normal temps and sunny all weekend - got lots of yard work done. Glad your weather improved and hope you had a great holiday weekend too!

Pond Chat / Re: winterizing structures
« on: September 28, 2007, 03:38:22 PM »
Vickie, I see that you've used large pieces of styrafoam to keep the plastic off the water surface in one of your ponds. I realize that you are in a much warmer zone than I am but do you think the styrafoam will stay intact all winter with my freezing temps (0*F, -20*C). I guess I am more worried about the repeat freeze-thaws we get.  I currently use beach inflatables that sometimes don't stay inflated all winter :)
