Pond Chat / Re: Population Boom!!

10 adult fish would already put you over what you should have in that much water, so rehome some of the older fish if you want to keep some of the youngsters.  I have always kept a few of the ones I consider special to me and sometimes that means rehoming some I've had for a long time.

We've cooled off to the high 80's, low 90's during the day here after the storms went through yesterday, which was our hottest day of the year so far.  Storms went all around us again and again, no rain.  At least it's supposed to cool off to the high 60's and low 70's at night for the next few days, so that will be a treat.

Your koi look happy and healthy, I'd say you're doing something right.  Now as they get bigger, they're going to tax your filters and may destroy your plants.  I'm sure they're finding lots of natural food in your pond as well, so I woudn't sweat the expensive food thing.  I'm not a believer that expensive equals better anyway.

In the 90's again today and really humid.  Thunderstorms all around us and we still didn't get a drop of rain.  I'm afraid I'm going to have a lot of dead plants with the serious lack of rain this summer.

You certainly have others in those pics that look like koi as well.  Don't worry, they will get bigger.

I haven't tried growing a taro in years.  All those pics with so many different types makes me want to try them again.  I'll have to ear mark a couple of my pots for a few next year.

Very pretty.  Must be nice to see so many blooms at the same time.  Even on a rainy day.

That's why I'm so enamoured with the night blooming tropicals.  You get to see the blooms before you go to work and after you get home from work too.  If they could develop a night blooming hardy, I'd love that.

That's a beautiful lily Gary.  I love the colour and the shape of the flower.

Been a beautiful couple of days now that the heat has broken.  We desperately need rain too though.

You were right, this pretty flower was waiting for me when I went out for my morning coffee yesterday before work and again this morning.  Another fat bud is well on it's way to the surface too.

The first two pics are the lily bud at 9:00 this morning.  The second two are the bud at 8:00 tonight.  Didn't take it long to shoot out of the water.  I'm hoping it'll be open by the time I get home from work tomorrow.

Can't wait until it opens up now.  I took some pics this morning to see how fast it grows today.  It's the night blooming Trudy Slocum.  I see a second bud well on it's way up to the surface too.

Pond Chat / Re: Locals cannot figure out how to pot water lilies
« on: July 07, 2012, 08:32:38 PM »
With all the information on the net now on how to plant things, I agree it's strange how so many people still prefer to have things like that done for them.  It could be bad experiences with planting things bare root in the garden, as that can be tricky with some plants.  Kill enough of them and you'd be gun shy about bare root anything.
I would love to be able to find bare root tropicals or lotus to plant up myself here.  Very difficult indeed and the potted tropicals are so expensive and potted lotus are a ridiculous price.
Then some people are just willing to pay for instant anything, so it could be they just can't be bothered to do it themselves and don't care what it costs to have it already done for them.

In the 90's here again today.  Quite the heat wave we've been having and the humidity is supposed to get worse for the entire next 7 days at least.  I sure hope we get the rain they've been promising, as everything is going to get very crispy soon if we don't.

Supposed to be hardy to zone 2, can't get much tougher than that, ha, ha.  It freezes solid in my pond every year and always comes back.

Dwarf Horsetail is hardy, not tropical.

Pond Chat / Re: SNOWING

They're calling for a major snowstorm just north and east of us today/tomorrow.  I hope it misses us entirely.  I was hoping for a milder and less snowy winter than last year, but it's not looking that way.

Do you have limestone screenings or rocks in or around your pond?  Untreated cement?  Both could be knocking your PH up too high.

Sorry about the koi Marla.  Carp pox can be so disfiguring.  I know it must have been a hard descision.  I think losing the maple was a good idea.   Nice tree, wrong place.  I have a black lace elder and a tiger eye sumac where I would have prefered a tree.  A whole lot more managable size/shade and leaf wise.
We took down our russian olive that was close to the pond last week.  It wasn't so much a shade issue, nice dappled shade really, but those leaves were a problem all season.  I'm not missing that part of it at all, it looks so bare without it though.  I'm going to plant a pine instead.  Nice winter interest and no leaves to worry about.

First pic is a leopard frog, first one I've ever seen in my 23 years at this house.  Next a couple of butterfly pics and finally a dragonfly pic.

Pond Chat / Re: Do you hate anything about ponding??? I do.....

Water changes or pump or filter problems in winter are my pet peeves.  Not fun playing in water when it's freezing outside.
I don't have to rehome any baby koi until next spring, so I won't be whining about that until then.
My previous ponds had goldies and I was forever thinning out those herds, I found catching the little monsters after dark was easier.  I knew where they liked to settle for the night, so just dunk the net in that area after dark, they can't see it and I used to get a netfull every time.

Pond Water Quality / Re: Dogs and Pond Parasites
« on: September 22, 2008, 05:15:26 AM »
Has Giardia been confirmed by your vet?
Is your pond the only place he could have gotten it?  No other ponds or puddles he could have been drinking from?
Is your pond well filtered with that big fish load, 50 babies is a lot.

I don't know if they can test pond water for Giardia....I would think it should be possible.
My dogs have always lapped up the pond water, I've never had an issue in over 20 years, but it's understocked and well filtered.

Natures Variety Instinct makes a rabbit formula.  They have a turkey and duck formula and a chicken formula as well.  I buy mine at Global Pet foods or Rens.  If you go to naturesvariety.com, they have a store locator so you can find a store near you that carries it.
