V. amazonica and Rings
« on: October 06, 2009, 06:34:23 AM »
This completes the set of Vic flowers shown on AP this season.  Timgod has shown the 'Longwood Hybrid' and Pondman V. cruziana.....this is the only other species of Victoria, V.amazonica.

And just because I still get a hoot out of them....these are the rings I collected this morning from a cruziana and amazonica.  As far as I know it was Rich Sacher who came up with the idea to "ring" the flower; the ring can then be saved for days in the 'fridge' and cut into quarters to use in pollinating at least four other blooms.  His idea did wonders for seed production!

She is so delicate looking and what a lovely light pinkish white shade she is  o(:-). Very interesting on the ring pollinating for seed production ;D.

Hey Craig, is that ring from the center of the second night bloom?

The ring is cut out of the first day flower.  You want it emasculated before the pollen is released or you lose control over any subsequent crosses and may shake off most of the pollen when you remove the ring.
