"Top" Feeders???
« on: November 04, 2009, 10:17:17 AM »
Okay, so I have these three bottom feeders...Chinese hi-fin banded sharks... that I've heard all sorts of stories about.  My three do a good job at busting those myths about these bottom feeders.

1.  They only stay on the bottom and you never get to see them because they're so dark.
MYTH!  Mine not only swim to the surface, but they swim to the shallow end of the pond.

2.  They only swim together and not with the other fish.
MYTH!  Mine can often be seen with two or three other fish, koi and shubbies, swimming together in the shallow channel.

3.  They only feed on the junk and algae at the bottom.
MYTH!  Not only have I caught mine chowing down on the algae on lily pad leaves all the way to the surface, but now they come to the surface and eat the koi food at feeding time!

I know they aren't starving because they're getting pretty big.  But have you ever seen two bottom feeders slurping at koi food upside down on the surface of the water??

Yes, I know...it's time to take the water hyacinth out!!   {:-P;;...
I'm broke and can't afford to pay attention, so you might have to lend me an ear.

The first is when i brought the first one home...
The second pic he's on the left...in shallow water...
The third pic is shows how skinny they are from the top view....

Hey, my plecos do the same thing.  They motor around on the surface upside down slurping down fish food.  They can't really see where they are going in that position so they bump into stuff and miss the big chunks a lot, I love to watch them.  Try putting a slice of raw zucchini in the microwave for 30 sec and then put it in the pond when it cools.  They love it.  Mine zoom around stuck to the bottom of a piece of zucchini like it was a skim board.

LOL!!   I'll have to try that!  At first I thought maybe they were hungry...but they're pretty big now.  They are slow growers, but I see them all over the pond...including in the skimmer sometimes!
