Surface Algae - Possible Cause Discovered

It's nice to be back on the forum. I have what may be a bit of useful information. This season I am not running a UV filter and had light to moderate surface algae growth. After reading a number articles I discovered that lawn grass clippings can be a major contributor to surface algae. To test this information I eliminated existing underwater AND surface (free floating) algae through regular use of "TetraPond AlgaeControl". Next, keeping a watchful eye on my pond I notice that grass clippings that were blown into the pond became trapped in and around free floating pond plants. Over time the clippings developed into free floating surface algae.

While this is certainly not a world shaking event I though it might help others deal with simple surface algae. In closing I must say that I have been extremely pleased with the quality performance of TetraPond's AlgaeControl product. The product label states - "Controls green water, blanket weed and string algae in ponds Safe for use with ornamental fish and plants Handy measuring cap ensures proper dosing Each bottle treats up to 6,000 gallons". I purchase it at Petco for about $17 a bottle.

Grass clippings are the most aggravating thing. I have a long drawn out story on another forum about it. But won't bore you with my  :'( story. I skimmed and skimmed the little pond by hand to try to sort them off the surface Saturday and then discovered the pump was almost clogged. So in the midst of cleaning out the skimmer, dropped the filter media which put the grass right back where it came from!!!  Luckily, there is so much overgrowth around the big pond, it blocked the grass from blowing in there.

That makes sense what you're saying. I also found success in algae control with chemicals. Usually 1 or 2 doses will do it. Wish  the algae in my swimming pool was so easy to control.

Grass clippings are high in nitrogen. Just as leaving them on the lawn fertilizes the lawn, having them in the pond would fertilize an algae bloom. Our mulching mower cuts them up small enough that they sift down into the lawn and we haven't had any problems with them.
