Fish Getting Gravid
« on: February 05, 2010, 08:52:14 AM »
Out of my entire overcrowded pond, I have only two females that I can tell.  Both are showing the beginnings of carrying eggs.

My fish usually spawn in March.

Last year my shubunkins started to chase each other in about March. I have two females shubunkins that are starting to look rather plump already.

Happy pondiing,

I have noticed my feeder goldies are chasing too.  There are 2 males and 2 females to produce dinner for my 8 red ear sliders.  Looks like dinner is going to get here soon!

I got a 125 gallon aquarium for a great price about 3 weeks ago.  Brought in a few of my "baby" goldfish & they spawned in the tank this morning  ::)  The smaller goldfish quickly ate the eggs.

Sounds like spring is on the way hopefully  O0

There is never enough room for all of the water lilies that I want ;-)

So I'm pretty sure this year I will be truly ovestocked if I have any babies...only 2 last year.  So I was wondering....what do you do with baby golfish when you have too many?

Maybe the local school, etc., but was wondering what most of you do.

Well, Joy, if you just leave them in the pond, and don't provide a spawning mat or plants or other hiding places, most of them will be eaten.

I have rehomed koi using Craig's List.  You could also join Freecycle.com   Look for the Houston chapter, and then the chapter in your part of town.

Also, occasionally someone asks for or offers fish on the Houston Pond Society e-group.  Right now a Katy lady  is looking for koi to replace the ones she lost (all of them!) after the freeze.  I have some I'd like to give her (blue ones, too!) but I can't catch the danged things!
