pitcher question
« on: February 16, 2010, 07:01:07 PM »
my pitcher plant, a few posts down, a cross from at least a Sarracenia leucophylla, last summer i thought had died because it dried out and went unwatered for probably 3 weeks... i didnt give up on the crispy brown plant and stuck it in water and sure enough a few weeks later little pitcher leaves started shooting up.

about 10 of them have come up since then (5 months) ... the tallest leaf has only reached 5 inches maybe, it and all the others never open up because the tips seem to brown. now my q is what do i do with it... keep it in bright sun and warm area and wet till it keeps growing, because it hasnt put up another leaf yet for 2 months now, so is it going dormant and just cut the green leaves or will it keep going.

I know from my own pitcher plant experience -
- keep in rain water (or pond water) just up to top of dirt in pot
- they love sunlight especially in winter cold
- do not fertilize
- I don't cut green leaves and leave the brown leaves until the new growth comes in

My pitcher plants are dormant right now.  No signs of spring yet.  Good luck!

Rad,

Sarracnecia stay alive outside throught the winters here in the Northwest. I've potted mine and have it floating in my pond right now. They have been in the pond now for almost two weeks, and seem to be fine.

Happy ponding,

Rich
