My best friend for nearly five years is dead.
« on: March 29, 2010, 09:01:23 AM »
She was a beautiful dog. Half chow and half golden lab. I've complained to my mom about my dad letting her out just before he pulled out of the drive way. This morning he did it without letting me or my wife know and she followed him down the driveway. I started out with her food this morning and one of my nephew's buddies from down the road came and asked me if we had a dog like that. I asked him to bring it up and let me look. Yep, it was her. I had gotten emotionally attached to that dog and now she's gone. My leg is in no shape to bury her right now and I feel like he ought to. I'm both heart broken and really mad.

This is in her memory.

Happy ponding,
Scott o(

This is a no win situation.  You can’t blame your dad (vocally) even though he is at fault, because he is your dad.  Meanwhile, your heart is torn for your dog.  Years ago, I had three dogs that escaped the yard and we spent weeks hunting for them every day.  We finally got them all back, one injured and the animal shelter was going to euthanize it, but we found out and intervened and nursed it back to health.  Meanwhile, my father, for whom I have always had the greatest respect, berated my wife for being so emotionally upset over the missing animals.  My response was to ignore him for a year as I was and am convinced that he was unreasonably flippant over something we felt was of importance.  We finally got over the disagreement, but now, 17 years after his passing, I regret the year of little interaction with this man of great experience and knowledge.
I know that he grew up in a different time than I; he was born a mere 32 years after Custer’s last stand at the Little Bighorn, and as a youth had known men who had served with Custer (Though were not with him on that fateful day). [If anyone would like to open a window of understanding to a period of our history really not too long ago, get a copy and read “Son of the morning Star” http://www.amazon.com/Son-Morning-Star-Custer-Bighorn/dp/0865475105  . It’s a real eye opener.]  Raised on a farm in southern Missouri, Dad had a perspective on life a little different than mine, which, I suspect, is true of all generations.  Best to go out and get a new puppy as soon as possible.  There may never be another “best dog I ever had” for you, but I guarantee there will be many other wonderful dogs in your future.

Sorry that I've not responded sooner but it's hard to see what you type through tears.

Her name was Frances Jeanne and she was struck by a speeding vehicle. Not sure if it was a car or truck. If her name look familiar, she was named after the two hurricanes that hit Florida back to back. Both storms, we came up here and stayed with my sister. We got her while we were up for Jeanne.

Johns, I'm not going to get another pup until we move out. I want to raise it up like I raised her. She was my pond pup. The one moment that I wished to got as a film clip, I didn't. That is when she went to get a drink from the metal stock tank and one of my koi came up and kissed her on the nose. Also, I remember before she learned what a turtle was, I caught her carrying one through the back yard. I'm starting to get teary eyed again, so I'll stop for now.

Thank you to everyone that has responded.
Happy ponding,
Scott o(

Oh Scott, that is so horrible.  I am so sorry.

Gee, it's bad enough when a loved pet becomes old and dies.  But loosing a dog in such a tragic manner is so much more painful, because you always think, "If only...."

Johns, thanks for those words of wisdom.

I really, truely, thank everyone that responded. This is one reason that I have been in chat every night this week, trying to talk about things to cheer me up, like ponds and plants. I try to suppress memories of her until I'm alone so I cry it out. I still get surprised by someone asking me a question that brings back a memory and I nearly burst into tears in front of them. Again, I thank y'all for being the best pond family that I've never met in person.
Happy ponding,

The Power Of A Dog
« Reply #23 on: April 02, 2010, 05:23:20 PM »
The Power of the Dog
by
Rudyard Kipling

There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie--
Perfect passsion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart to a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find--it's your own affair--
But ... you've given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!)
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone--wherever it goes--for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.

We've sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve:
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-term loan is as bad as a long--
So why in--Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

So sorry for you loss. I am crying as I write this. I have lost some of my sweet puppies the last couple of years. One to cancer two to old age. It is okay to cry. You loved her. It will get better over time. She will always have a place in your heart. We have had 3 dogs cremated and they will be burried with us. Scott God Bless you.

Sorry about you losing your friend and buddy. I know just exactly how you feel.
We would be absolutely devasted if something happened to our two little
schnauzers.   You need to consider gettiing you another pup, raise it yourselves.
That does help.  not that you still won't hurt when you think of this one.
