Problems with Microbe-Lift Algaway ??

Has anyone had any problems with using Microbe-Lift Algaway?  Any problem killing fish and not plants?  I have a pond that is 20x25 and used approximately 1 pint and after using the Microbe-Lift algaway the next day I saw stress in all my fish... After that evening...one by one... I had fish start dying..I had 35 fish dye in one night.

I lost them all.. 

My question is... has anyone had the problem before after using Microbe-Lift algaway?  I will never use it again... I have a Savio SkimmerFilter and the Savio Waterfall filter and I have had problems from day one keeping the green algae away.  Pond is in full sunlight with one shade tree which only shades about 30 minutes before sunset.   Help me please... tell me your suggestions on what to use to get the water to clear up and keep clear.  I have been ponding for about 6 years and this new pond is killing me.  Makes me want to give up!

That must have been a shock to have all your fish die.

Is there any possibility you used the wrong dose? I would look on the container and call the contact phone number and talk to them about it.

When I decide I really want my pond clear, I filter the daylights out of the water. I put filter media in mesh baskets and put them in two or three drops of my waterfall + in my skimmer/filter. I clean them several times a day if necessary. I also have a Skippy for my biological filter. I even have put a mesh basket inside the spillway of the Skippy to give me additional filtration, but be careful doing that because when that piece is full, the spillway becomes blocked and your Skippy fills up and overflows possibly emptying the pond.

I recently have been dosing with Tetra algae control because of String Algae. I have used other brands also with no problem.

Let's see, 20x25 by what? Are you dosing for the right volumn of water? 20 X 25 X depth X 7.5.  The dosage on this is 1/4 cup per 720 gallons and if your pond was about 3 feet deep, the pint you used would be very close to the dosage of the Tetra Algae Control. I assume you had a good supply of oxygen going in the pond.

One plus with no fish. They aren't adding nutrients to the water.  Let us know how this turns out.

I have never used Algaway but according to the website it does say it is safe for fish so you might want to double check your dosage like Esther said.  Really sorry you lost all your fish.

I hate to admit this, but I have had similar results using  the new Algea Fix product.  Claiming not to harm fish or plants.  I should have known better, and they should tell on the directions, that you need increase aeration, since the algea is being killed off decreases the oxygen in the water.  It may well have said to keep up oxygen levels and I didn't pay attention, I have since thrown away the container and plan to never use it again.  My pond was newly set up last year when I used it and each time I put it in I would loose a fish a few days later.  When I finally quit using it, I quit loosing fish.  Wish I hadn't been so thick headed, I lost some nice ones.    A few years back when I was ponding, I used a product that did work quite will, Accurel E is the name, you sprayed it over the water.  However, using that product I was doing a lot of aeration at the same time, had huge Koi a foot and better in the pond, didn't loose a one.  

I have the exact same skimmer and bio filter as you, savoi.  Also have the same green water, but I am adding bacteria every other week and it is at least looking like better water, not thick, just green LOL.  I plan to add the filter material they are using in the skippy filters to by bio filter and see if it does better.  They supply the nylon banding material as bio media, and I think the floor scrub pads they use in the skippy would be much better.  If that doesn't work, I am building the skippy.

I am so sorry you lost your fish.  I would not use any algae fix in the pond.  It depletes the water of oxygen.  It takes at least 6 weeks from the start up for the bio to work properly unless you happen to have had some of your bio in bags sunk in the pond over winter, then it would take less time.  If you have too many fish in there it would never clear.  Why don't you start using koi clay to grab onto the suspended particles and put some quilt batting under the falls.  You have to be sure you retrieved all of your fish that expired also.

Oh how awful, I'm sorry to hear that!!  I've been using Microbe-Lift with just beneficial microbes, but not the Algaway.  I've had no problems with Microbe-Lift in the past year.  Your sitation does make me nervous, though.  What a shame.   :'(

 For small ponds with heavy algae growth, clean the excess algae off the sides and ornaments before adding MicrobeLift ALGAWAY 5.4™. This will reduce the amount of decaying organic matter. Fountains, Small Ponds with goldfish and koi - Treat only those fountains and ponds which will have no outflow after treatment. High water temperatures cause more rapid natural decay of dead algae which can cause fish distress. If animals are present clean out excess algae as stated above or use before temperature exceeds 75°F (24°C)

Caution: In ponds, insure that water is well aerated via waterfall, fountain or other method to prevent fish loss. Aeration must be continuous.

Caution: Not safe for use with snails, shrimp and other crustaceans or mollusks.

I'm sorry to hear about your experience. I used Microbe-lift once a useless product IMHO. Dying algae can be a problem, and lots of aeration is a good thing. Many plants will help to consume excess nutrients. Feeding the fish also adds food for algae.

Your pond filtration could use some help. I too have the Savio skimmer and biofilter. I have added six brushes and an additional mat to the skimmer. I have also added a 6" thick roll of blue Matala mat in the biofalls on top of the Springflow. I have also added scraps of nylon tie strap material to the Springflow. I've also added an additional layer of mat on top of the Matala. It seems to almost be enough filtration for my low fish load. I also use watercress in my falls and pond which I pull out when it gets big and ugly—removing the nutrients they have absorbed.

There's been a lot of folks it seems this year losing fish to these kinds of chemicals. The only things I can think of you may have over dosed, OR you did not have enough aeration in the pond. These chemicals suck the oxygen out of the water. ( of course the company's don't tell ya that) And then if you have a lot of plants they also suck oxygen out of the water at night. And if the water is warm there is less oxygen to begin with.

A new pond HAS to go thru a break in period and that means it HAS to turn green before it balances out and clears again. Using LOTS of plants helps to get the pond clear naturally . OR you can use a UV light.  They are WONDERFUL!!!!! It'll take a week or so,but it will clear much faster than using plants, and much safer than using chemicals.

I just want to sit down and cry!! I have had some of those fish for over 4 years and I had a bright yellow koi that was my favorite!!  He was over 17 inches long and was my baby! 

I may have used too much... but I thought I had enough aeration.  I have a falls which goes over several falls and rocks before it gets to the actual drop into the pond which is about 12-15 inches from the water level.  I had thought about adding an airpump to it but I hadn't yet.  I know the fish acted like they were smothering and the water now looks like it has a skim on it and as thick as can be,  All I want is my fish back.  I hate using chemicals.  I have never hardly ever had to use chemicals to get my pond to clear up until I moved them into this newer pond. It's been like losing a kid.

A UV light doesn't remove any nutrients that cause green water, just kills the algae and leaves the nutrients for more growth.

If you know your fish are struggling for air, hydrogen peroxide is an emergency aid. It adds oxygen to the water.

Thank you all for helping answer some of my questions.  I believe that each and all of you have answered some of my questions as to why I have lost all my fish.  I think I will not use the microbe anymore.  I hate using chemicals to do something that I know can be done naturally.  I hated seeing all my fish in a bucket!  enjoy and  (((huggs)))
