Aroids in the pond

I remember Jonna posting a superb photo of those Banana-like plants.  Anyone know where I can find some?

I had to Google it to see what you were talking about. Now I wish that I hadn't. After checking out this link, I'm going to be hunting down an Alocasia macrorrhiza (Borneo Giant). :)

Aroid is a big group and I have and have had a lot of them.  I had enormous black taro in the skippy at the pond in Cathedral City, CA.  I have several in the indoor pond here and many more in pots.  Aroid includes philodendron, dieffenbachia, taro/elephant ear, and even I think caladiums.   I could look for a pic from the pond up in Calif if that would help but it was just a couple starts of I think Black Magic that took off in the skippy.  I really loved the look.  I'm trying to get some to something similar in the bog boxes here but there is not quite as much light in the indoor pond and too much direct sun on the outdoor pond.  The most banana looking aroid would be one of the dieffenbachias, they get enormous and have banana type leaves both green and variegated.

I've lost my Black Magic through the Alabama Winter. :'( I will worry about replacing those type of plants when we have our own place again and there's a hothouse to over-winter them in. :)

Cannas look very banana like and you can grow them aquatically.
They love wet feet.  :)

Was it this one?  I want one too.  This is at the Singapore Botanic Gardens, I've searched for one down here and not found it.  I think I posted a pic of it once before. It is a Typhonodorum lindleyanum.

Here's a pic I saved from somewhere

The first picture comes from this web site http://gardeningwithwilson.com/2007/10/05/my-water-banana-in-bloom/

Yup, Jonna, that's the true 'Aquatic Banana' which is it's Common Name. (another very misleading Common Name)
Craig grows it from seed and posted pix of it at Koiphen.

In my opinion as a professional landscape designer, unless you have a HUGE pond, like the ones Jonna posted, it looks silly to grow a huge plant in a little pond. Not only that, big plants create big shade which will not help your lilies bloom. In my landscape designs, I plant large leafy plants on the edge of the pond which gives you the large focal point without making your pond look smaller and crowded/cluttered/busy.

Jonna's pond looks great with the cannas and large plants planted in the background and around the edges.
Gives the lilies plenty of room to grow and plenty of sun.

Of course if you have a veggie filter, any big plant would look great in it as a focal point.  8)

Thanks Joyce, coming from you a compliment about pond design is really important  @O@   @O@  I'd move out the umbrella plant and some or all of the canna if I could find a couple of those banana palms.  I'm trying to shade a log at the back of the pond that I put some orchids on, although I think it didn't work and they look like they are dying.   :'(   I'm not doing well with these bare root orchids.

I wonder if Craig would part with a seed or two, I'd try and grow them out in my roof pond.  They are so gorgeous.

Jerry, no, just put it off to one side on the very edge or in the very back.  8)
Just don't plop it in the middle.  :P

Jonna, email Craig and ask.  8)

Sorry if it was somewhere and I missed it - how big do these puppies get??  Gorgeous.  I'd like something medium-large for a focal in my bog.  A banana-like plant would be neat.  I'll try to get new pics of the pond this weekend to show the changes.
