Nightbloomer tuber
« on: May 25, 2010, 06:04:51 PM »
I've been holding this in a 10 gallon aquarium with a heater & PC bulb lighting.  It has grown from a large collection of tubers that I was unable to seperate.  The roots were working their way into the gravel & it got big enough that I planted it up today.  Not sure which nightbloomer but I'm hoping it is Mrs. George C. Hitchcock.

Kat that is impressive. Almost looks like a note holder, the kind with what looks like a nail sticking up from a weight and you push papers down on it. Looks like someone puched a lot of leaves down on a nail.  ;D  You should have lots of plants, whatever variety. Maybe it will be Mrs. George Hitchcock. Let us know.

The fun thing about aquariums is you can keep the water clear with very little effort.  It also helps that I have a couple of my baby bristlenose fry in there to keep the plants clean.  I think I'll try this again early next year if I can get to any of my tropical tubers.  Float the tubers in baggies first until there is enough pad & root growth for potting.  Then once the pads get big enough on the surface time to move them.  Even a big plastic tote could be used for this purpose.  Just make sure there is some water circulation, decent lighting with Daylight power compact bulbs, heat, & a bristlenose pleco to keep everything tidy.

Not everyone has the luxury of a greenhouse, coldframe, or a way to heat their pond.  So this is an alternative to try to jump start some tropicals.  Some of the tubers took off right away while others kind of just sat there.  Another tuber I had to end up floating outside in order to get it going.

Kat it sure is a good idea. I do it too. I floated about 60 baggies of tubers in my 100 gallon pond in the basement. They had light and a heater and they sure got a jump start on my short season. I use aquariums too.
