Just saw the great blue heron flying over my pond honking away! >:(-  Glad I happen to be looking out the window as he soared overhead - I made some noise and he kept on going!  O0  For now... :o

after a few yrs of ponding, it finally happened to us. our pond is only about 10-12ft off our deck and we have THREE  dogs so we thought that we would Never have a heron problem. we Do live in bottom land and one finally found us. our dogs are not outside if we are gone and that was when the heron must 'visit'. lost my biggest fantail (16 yr old) and dont know how many others. have seen the heron at the pond again and the fish wont come out of their hidey places even to eat. as a nature person i have to leave it all alone but i miss seeing my fish. andi

I am told folks in NYC (Staten Island) get them too.    I built a canopy.  It helps a little.

I have used several big chunks of driftwood weighted down with rocks to give everyone a good hiding spot. Since doing so I have also noticed I am getting a higher survival rate on my babies as well. I guess the more hiding spots the better.j

We have lots of good hiding spots for the fish, yet last summer and fall he still got away with quite a few fish.  My husband bought a long piece of black PVC pipe and cut it into 3 sections and put weights on them to keep them from floating up, we also got an elbow piece of PVC, we have a very large clay pot that had broken - he was able to cut it in half and the fish love to be under that, I put a strawberry pot in last summer as well, and also plants for them to hide under, as well as an inverted metal basket that they can swim in and out of safely - looks like a golf ball basket from the driving ranges  Hiding spots are not a problem in our pond.

And yet it comes, and does its damage. :'(
