Red Hot Poker
« on: December 07, 2006, 01:44:04 PM »
This Red Hot Poker plant (Kniphofia zululandis) located in my parkway is one of my favorites.  I have several of them scattered about and I notice they often flower at different times of the year.  This plant flowered in May/June last year and here it is in December flowering this year.  It has also flowered in October....  I have two other divisions of the same plant and they are not showing any signs of flowering yet...  I assume its flowering time is determined by weather temperatures and water.  In any event they sure add a needed splash of color at this time of the year.  Even though the other stalks haven't opened up yet I thought I better snap a photo before someone comes along and picks them.....

Great color. Lots of different colors of pokers. I like the orange. :)

One of our homes in South Africa had a 'hedge' of red hot pokers. They always seemed to be in bloom as I recall. It was upcountry though (near Johannesburg) - dry like California, but with summer rains. Zululand is down on the Indian Ocean coast, and does have some humidity, so maybe this lot just enjoys all climates?

Those and hydrangeas are probably the plants that I remember most from my early, early years.

Great pop of colour.

Cheers,

Mike

These are a brilliant plant
I have an October flowering one which is just fantastic
I also have a fairly new one which flowers in July/August
I think the different flowering times are simply different plants?  But then again, all of my plants are taking turns at flowering at unusual times of year nowadays :)

You have a nice grouping there.  I especially like those near the tall grass (pampas?)
