It's not really a new pond, just sorta resurrected
« on: May 15, 2009, 07:48:22 PM »
This pond was burried in my yard and I decided to dig it out and get it running. The water was nice and clear but I decided to add some small river rock now its a bit murky. I bought a pondmaster 1000 filter and a 700 gph pump for starters. At this point i'm not really sure what I'm doing but i'm excited about doing it.

Looks like your "new" pond has allot of potential! Check out the plant exchange portion of this site and you can find some nice plants to stock your pond with...

On this site a find like that is priceless. I wish I could go out back and plant a plant only to find an already built pond. You will love yourself for doing this. As Greg said, a few plants and you are on your way to an even better Oasis. Nice back yard. keep up the good work.

Wow that would have been nice, well maybe next time. I just got back from the pond place, they told me putting the small rock that I placed on the bottom of the pond was a nono >:( none of their ponds had anything but fish and plants and all the plants were in pots, I bought two home hehehe, could drive way accross town and not buy anything.

Looks great.  Your cat seems to think so too.

What have you got for a filter?

It looks like Ghall is just using the sponge filter that is on the pump.

What kind of fish am I seeing in that pond, ghall?
Happy ponding,

The filter is a pondmaster1000 and a 700 gpm pump, those fish were goldfish but I picked up 3 koi today, the big white one was free a guy on craigslist just wanted to get rid of him.

Be careful buying a bunch of goldfish, they will multiply like rabbits...lol.  What a nice find in the backyard.

Like others said, be sure to check out the plant section here.  So many nice people with lots of plants.  I bet you can stock your pond for 10th of what you might pay at a nursery or pond store.

We're all very generous here too, nice big healthy plants. Most will know if they can be in your zone or not.

Hmmm, thinking of....a tropical lily or 2 would be very happy there.

Ponds are like patato chips, ya just can't have one.

you may have to re-home the koi eventually as they will outgrow a small pond like that.  As they grow bigger, and as the goldies multiply that filter may not be enough.

Once those plants grow and spread out that will be a gorgeous little pond.  Koi also sometimes like to eat lilies...

Your pond looks great!  When all the plants fill in you will be amazed how nice and peaceful it will look.

I started out with a basically empty pond and all my plants came free from local people. Look for local mailing lists where people trade plants, or for your local freecycle group.  Because my turtle eats the plants, I actually get new plants for free every 6 months or so.

I know koi are the iconic garden pond fish, but they are very dirty and in a pond that small, your water will be fouled in no time.  Also, they will eat and tear up your plants and even eat goldfish.  I would stick with goldies and maybe mosquito fish (mosquito fish will keep your goldies from multiplying much.)
My pond is a turtle pond!

2006: ~135 gallons of water in a 150 gallon stock tank.
2012: ~250 gallons in a 330 gallon stock tank
2013: ~40 gallon in-ground wading pool for my box turtle

One RES, and a passel of gambusias.

Nice! With a little bit of hard work and an ingenious imagination this should look stunning.  I am in the process of doing the same for a new property of mine.
