Just wondering, since in some of your photo posts you mention having to wait a couple of years to see if the color is stable, how hardy it is, etc.

How long does it take until you're ready to market any given lily?

Also, do you set out to create a particular color or leaf pattern, or do you just start with something that looks good, and then try to improve on it?

Hi Jules.    Sometimes it takes 3 or 4 years for a plant to settle down.  My plant purple day didn't start making purplish flowers until this year and it was a seed in 04.  my experience is that in mexicana cross plants the dark pinks and reds tend to get lighter for about 2 to 3 years and the yellows get darker, even on flowers that have both colors in the same flower.   The answer to your last question is yes.   I do set out with particular goals in mind and I make use of whatever presents itself to me.   for instance my plant  fairy skirt  just showed up with outwardly curled petals.   I will work to enhance and fix this trait while breeding for hot colors on a plant with flowers held high above the water on strong peduncles.  This should create a flower that looks like a pink, red or blue palm tree.    This should take around 5 years I think.  the blue will probably take a bit longer.    I am also developing plants that don't fade in the summer like so many mex cross plants do.    I like plants that fade in summer the color change is nice I just don't want them all to do that.             Mike.
