Fathers day in NC

I’m going to start by quoting my dear departed father when he would want to describe a relative or friend that fell into a sweet deal. “He could fall into a shit house and come out with a new suit on” That describes my trip to visit my daughter in Raleigh NC and subsequent visit to Duke gardens that she said had a lily pond. Little did I know that the IWGS 2010 water lily entry’s are being grown out in one of the ponds for this years competition.

I realized what I had stumbled upon when I spotted this unique bloom that Timgod had posted as one of the entrants to this years completion.

Now it even gets better, standing in the pond was a young woman that was doing her best to move pads and floating spent myrtle flower petals away from a lily bloom so she could take an unobstructed picture while also holding a sun shade at the same time.

I soon struck up a conversation with her learning that she was the person in charge of the water gardens at Duke gardens and was in the process of taking photo’s for the competition. I mentioned Turtle Mike’s from WV entries Sunfire and Yellow Watermelon which she pointed out. Most of the lilies are not obviously fully grown out, so some were not blooming as of yet, Sunfire being one of them. None of the lilies were tagged that I could see but talking to her was a thrill, learning how the competition is held and just having the chance to see some unique new hybrids in person. If my family was not wilting in the heat I would have volunteered to assist her with the picture taking if she would have accepted. What a great way to spend Fathers day, just perfect. I did happen to mention AP and she indicated she would probably be joining sometime soon. Wow, you really did fall into the proverbial 'shithouse' didn't you?  Your pics are great and the story is wonderful--realizing what you had stumbled on and actually knowing (sort of  ) the entrants!

Is the blossom on the first one actually speckled or have blotches on the petals? It is neat with the speckled pads too.

Yes I did have fun Esther, the best part was sharing the walk through the gardens with my daughters. Yes the peddles of the lily have yellow streaks in them which I found rather unique. It was high noon and getting hotter and I wish I had a different camera with me or could have waded into the pond for some close ups that would have come out with a crisper picture. My eldest daughter shares my love of gardens in all their different forms. I actually set up a small ornamental pond for her at her new first home while visiting for the first time since she moved in May. We bought a miniature umbrella palm at the gardens that was very reasonably priced that really finished the project off.

  I should have cheked this thread sooner. It looks like there is some good competition this year. I might vote for Wanvisa myself, that's exelent I like it.  Wanvisa, I hope I'm getimg the name right is the first pic with the white streaked petals.  They all look really good.  The third pic is Yellow Watermelon I believe. It's still got a lot of growing to do. It looks pretty sad in that pic. It'll come around.
  I was very late sending my plants in this spring because Yellow Watermelon was in a bed mixed in with other plants and I had to wait for it to make leaves and bloom to be sure I had the right plant. I can leave them in the contest two years and they will be entered next year if they don't win this year.  By looking at those pics I expect Wanvisa to win this year.
 Maybe I stand a chance next year.
