Inside project I'm working on
« on: September 16, 2010, 02:05:38 PM »
Everything is winding down outside.  It's been hot and dry, so I decided to start an inside job.  My kitchen chairs looked really bad so I decided to try recovering them myself.  I've never tried anything like this before and it was actually pretty easy.  I'm getting really good with an electric staple gun.  I have four chairs done.  Have two stools to do.  Only spent $60 for fabric and I feel like I have something new!!!!

Sue, the color doesn't show up quite right on camera.........it's really a deep burgundy.

Annette, I'm a DIY'er cause I'm cheap.  ;)

Wow! Looks good. I would have a hard time doing that. Would end up replacing them. Good for you!

They look great. I love doing upholstery like that. Don't like the type where I have to make 43 cushions all the same shape and size. Don't like doing cording. Oh and not real thrilled with tufting either.

We are also DIY because we are cheap, also very picky and particular.

You did a great job! How did you finish the backs?

Esther, you sound like you have experience.  I might be asking for help later on!!!  The other day my Mom and I were in a furniture store and I was checking out how everything is covered.  You would be amazed at how much is just pleated and stapled.

Jessica, here's a pic of the back.  I tore apart the old material, made my pattern and checked out how they had made it.  I sewed the ends, slipped it over the chair, hand sewed the seam across the top and stapled the bottom.....really easy.  I love these roller chairs.  As you get older, you appreciate anything with rollers on it.  lol

I'm glad the dirt on the old covers didn't show up in the pictures.  After twenty years and two little boys, they were dirty!!!

Not much experience but usually do what you did, tear it apart and watch to see how it was put together to start with. I will not do things like a couch or living room chair. Not saying I couldn't, but hate doing stuff like when there are several cushions and hate doing the cording on the cushions. The cording is inside the seam and you can't see what you've done until after you get done. There is a special cording "foot" that will ride right on top of the cord so directs the stitch nicely---straight and where it should be but of course I couldn't find mine the last time I needed it. I made a little black monogrammed (Ken W and Tammie) pillow for my stepson's car. He's redoing a 79 Mustang and I found a design to embroider. I happened to have a piece of the fabric used in the seats so put a Mustang design that is probably copied from the Ford one on the pillow and made some orange (the car is orange with a black interior) cording out of bias tape and cord out of a traverse rod, for the sides of the pillow.

Karen... {:-P;;...I knew they weren't purple...but I couldn't think of the correct color either  :D

And, yes as I get older I like a chair with rollers.  I use the desk chair when I am looking in the bottom of the upright freezer.  Much easier to dig in that bottom basket if I'm sitting down.

We did that a few years ago to a set we bought at Salvation Army thrift store. It really does give you a whole new look! Yours are coming out splendidly!! Do you even know what it costs to have it done professionally? It's insane!
