« on: October 03, 2010, 04:31:34 PM »
It's slowed down a lot in the last week or so but Sunfire is still blooming well and there are a lot of tropicals as well as ISGs still blooming well.

That's a hard question for me to answer Jerry since I have hundreds of different lilies and they leave most or nearly all of them alone. I just don't have a way to tell which ones they dislike the most.

I can tell you which ones they LIKE the most though !

First this is not a lily but it is a water plant that I like and think is way under apreciated in water gardening and it is Water Plantain. It has GOT to be a Red Ear Sliders FAVORITE vegetable. If you want to grow a plant for turtle food then Water Plantain is what you want. Grow it like you would grow lotus in very shalow water in a pot where your turtles can't get to it because they will eat every bit of it and kill it. In ideal conditions it will grow in 2-3 ft of water. This is turning into a " what turtles LIKE to eat thread so I had to mention it. It is also very pretty with a spray of tiny white flowers about 2 ft high.
RES will travel from one pond to the next to eat it.

A red ears favorite lily is definitly Laydekery Fulgens. I can barely grow it they eat it so much.

  Next would be Carolina Sunset.

After that I would say that about any tropical lily would be next fave.

After that I realy don't know. Those first two are the only ones that they consistantly eat a lot of that I can think of.
As my population of big turtles grows I might be able to learn more since they will be eating more lilies. I realy don't have much turtle damage so I don't take notice of which ones are slightly more or less damaged.

I know that snappers like Yellow Watermelon stems the best. They just about striped one this year. Snappers are on the menu from now on. One of my favorites for sure, yum.

My hardy X tropical plants have been unmolested so far and I have 5 purple ones so far. No blues yet but stay tuned. Lots of  hot reds and pinks though.

One thing that's interesting about my H X Ts is that bees hate them and will not land on them except rarely and then they leave quickly. This is great because around here for most of the year the anthers are destroyed by the end of the first day or the beginning of the second. Especialy the tropicals. it really ruins the flowers.
My H X Ts stay perfect because no bees visit them.  This is very good because the beautyfull tropical anthers are one of the main things that distinguish my H X Ts flowers from hardies.

Good answer.  I know they ate my Colorado to the nub!  Quickly too!
I rescued it.   It's in a tub now.
My pond lacks color thus my question.
Thanks

About now is when they just about stop for the winter. Although some keep going later than most. Sunfire for instance is the latest hardy that I know. Texas Dawn has buds up as late a Sunfire but they don't open. If sunfire has flowers up they will open and when the water gets realy cold in mid-late October the flowers just stay open 24 hours with the sepals held straight down. They are still closing at night now and in a week or two they will just remain open.

My hardy X tropical plants are still blooming and they have 24 hour flowers already. Some of them have stoped blooming.
Purple Satin could have 4 flowers open at one time in the next few days because it's so warm and sunny and it has lots of surface buds. It doesn't seem to mind the cold although it is geting more of a pinkish glow especialy in the petal bases that is just beautifull.  It will spend the winter outside this year and we will see when it starts blooming in spring.

Some tropicals are still blooming but they look pretty sad for tropicals.

  Late Sunfire from last year.

  That's Pennsylvania.

That shows what a tropical will do with enough room, soil and sun.
