Ducks Squashed in Fall.....
« on: October 06, 2010, 11:13:20 AM »
OK, that got your attention!  ;D

I went to Roger's Garden in Newport Beach yesterday to checkout their Autumn/Halloween decorations plus hopefully find more vege seeds for Fall planting.  Absolutely love the pumpkins and squash displays.

These first ones are of squash that so look like ducks.  Love it!  Then there are the squash that look like turbans out of Arabian Nights.

White pumpkins all dressed up on a rainy day.  I'm sure these pumpkins appreciate the very cool weather we are experiencing now compared to the extremely HOT record breaking temperature weather we had last week!

I like how the pots are planted with succulents that have the center space open for replacing/ exchangeable centerpieces.  Did I say that right?

Then there is the ubiquitous Fall decor of Indian corn, so colorful.  Are they edible when they are first picked before they are dried?

2nd photo: I'll have to copy this display of succulents and Joey, an Australian native plant, that look perfect together in this wall frame.

Finally, departing shots of a nice afternoon walking among the pumpkins and squash.  Wondering if I should give it a try planting some in the Spring   I also bought a few packets of seeds for my Fall vege garden: Winter squash, artichoke, beets, parsnips, carrots, a variety of herbs I have never grown and some more I would like to plant elsewhere in the garden.

Hope everyone is enjoying the colors of Fall.  I need to get busy!

Such pretty pictures.  Pumpkins make me smile!  Our pumpkin patch was pretty pitiful this year.  Too much rain then too little rain.  We never kept the weeds under control either.  Only got five or six  big ones and a couple baskets full of little ones.  We planted pie squash and only got one, but its big enough to make lots of pies!  Around here there are pumpkins everywhere.  We have a huge fall festival that draws people from all over.  Everyone sells pumpkins in their yards........so colorful!!!

Nice variety of squash/pumpkins.

None of our pumpking got bigger than a basketball.  We gathered about 50.

We picked about 2 bushels of small gourds of about 6 or 7 vatieties.  Only one birdhouse gourd.

If I plant any next year, it will be the turban type.

Karen and Sue, I love that you grow pumpkins/squash/gourd.  Do the vines take up a lot of space?  I think that if I got a couple of pumpkins in my garden I would be totally wowed.  I also think it would be so cool to grow those gourds that can be used for bird houses.

Mike, fyi, the Christmas display indoors is under wraps for this week.  So if you check out the Fall display and Halloween Room soon you'll have plenty to see, plus there's the rest of the garden.  But I'm sure u know that. ;)

Beautiful!! I just love pumpkins, gourds, etc. I envy those of you in parts of the country where you have some of the more unusual varieties. We don't see them here.
I'm planning on driving over to the pumpkin patch on Sunday. This year they are supposed to have the white ones and the "black" ones.
I used to grow my own every year and always planted a bunch of the mini pumpkins and i would sell some of them. I can't grow them now at this place. The prairie dogs won't stay out of them. Tried everything to keep them out but no luck. They would snap every pumpkin off the vine. >:(- :'( Sometimes I really miss my completely chainlinked property that nothing could get in our out of. ::)

Annette, what great pics of a cool place to visit.  There are pumpkins here everywhere, every size and shape..and my FIL always raises gourds with crooknecks and lumps and bumps and gives them to all of us to decorate with.  They are easy to grow and they climb--I would think you could grow them too Annette, in a very small space:  just go up!

Thanks for giving me ideas in the decorating department!  I'm always stealing your ideas with the succulents--now it's with pumpkins and gourds!   ;)

Very interesting and I'm glad no ducks were harmed in the making of that display.

Thanks for the grow up tip, LuAnn!

Shanna, I'm thinking about a chain link too.  Some 4 legged creature is getting into my garden digging up worms and such.  The mini's sound interesting too.

Three women die together in an accident

And go to heaven.

When they get there, St. Peter says,

'We only have one rule here
in heaven:

Don't step on the
ducks!'

So they enter heaven, and sure enough,

There are ducks all over the
place.

It is almost impossible not
to step on a duck,

And although they try their
best to avoid them,

The first woman accidentally
steps on one.

Along comes St.. Peter with the ugliest man she ever saw.

St. Peter chains them
together and says,

'Your punishment for stepping
on a duck is to

Spend eternity chained to
this ugly man!'

The next day,

The second woman steps
accidentally on a duck

And along comes St. Peter,

Who doesn't miss a thing.

With him is another extremely
ugly man.

He chains them together

With the same admonishment as
for the first woman.

The third woman has observed all this and,

Not wanting to be chained

For all eternity to an ugly
man, is very,

VERY careful where she
steps.

She manages to go months

Without stepping on any
ducks,

But

One day St.Peter comes up to
her

With the most handsome man
she has ever laid eyes on

..... Very tall, long
eyelashes, muscular.

St. Peter chains them together without saying a word.

The happy woman says,

'I wonder what I did to
deserve being

Chained to you for all of
eternity?'

The guy says,

'I don't know about you,

But I stepped on a
Duck.
