I saw a frog-first in many year-will he stay??
« on: September 16, 2010, 07:25:02 AM »
My pond was getting over grown with grapevine, weeds etc. I posted a pic awhile ago looked nice and green but I new it was weeds  {:-P;;. So while cleaning out around the pond I saw a FROG. Not one I tried to bring in but one that appeared on his own. Now that I took all that junk out I am afraid he will leave. I cannot figure out why frogs don't like my pond. I mentioned before it doesn't have a shallow end. It does have a shelf on one end of it. I would say about 1 foot deep.He did dive in and got back out right away. I haven't seen him since. PLEASE STAY and find a girlfriend!!! I love the sound. o(:-)

Tammy I have the same problem and I cannot understand the reason why they ignore my pond?:))

Actually, the first year I started the pond, starting from april, I had hundreds of visits and millions of eggs laid by the tree frogs and ofcourse the "night chorus".
But since then, this is the 3rd year that they come in april for only a few hours and go away to the neighbors  without laying their eggs.

I don't know how is with your pond but with mine, I can see one possible reason??

The first year I had taken my w.lily pots from a warmer part of the country and they had long stalks. The egg chains were always winded around there stalks.

But the following years, due to our climate, in april I have only pilot leaves on the pots and almost no stalks to round the egg chains. May be they do not find a security place to fasten their egg chains?

How about with your pond plants, do they have long stalks in early spring?

I am also suspicious if any snakes in my garden but did not see any till now.

This year I have only one, from an emergency spawn, I believe.

Congrats on your frog!
I'm a little aggravated with the bull frogs here.  They sit under a blooming flower (right now its mint and autumn joy sedum) and hop up to grab the butterflies.  I can see the whole plant shake from inside the house, when they make their attack.  There are always two of them under the sedum.  >:(-

Do you think fish discourage the frogs?

It seems like, as my koi have grown larger and more numerous, I have fewer toads around here.  I think a frog would have a hard time surviving in the pond, for fear the fish would eat him.

Also, do you have shallow muddy areas around the pond, or are the side steep and straight up and down?  I think frogs prefer a natural sloped edge to a pond.

Have not communicated with a frog lately. Just know that over the 7-8 years I've had a pond, they come and go. One summer I had four. I have purchased big fat, almost morphed tadpoles and never knew where they went. This summer we had one frog for a while in that preform in the back yard and two moved back and forth between the little pond and the bigger one but haven't seen any of them for a couple weeks now. I don't know where they come from or where they go. The nearest water is a river about a quarter of a mile away.

Tugo- my pond pics are in this link.
As you can see MANY lilies.
I should post "afters"
My liner is covered again in the falls pic. I had kids do damage and just fixed this year.
Near the house is underground with the plant shelf I spoke of. No real muddy area for the frogs. At my old house we had that shallow end and had frogs. I asked for a smaller pond for frogs and that didn't go over at all. Maybe I will try again some year when I catch up with other stuff. the area away from house is all about ground and deep edges or straight up and down.
Under the deck is just dirt. It could get muddy but maybe not enough.

please come back and bring a friend froggie!!

when we first filled our pond, we had up to 40 plus frogs in it at any given time for the first two weeks.no plants or anything.we where waiting on the first cycle of the pond.we then added plants and fish and have not seen a frog in the pond since.the buckets i have to put plants in before i put them in the pond are full of them.i guess they don't want to be in  the pond with  the fish.i don't know if  koi will eat frogs or not.

Iv'e had frogs and tadpoles.  They all leave! Where to I have no idea, no water for miles.  And plenty of hot asphalt.  I gave up.

Nice pond Tammy. Had seen your topic before also.
Since Marcuswon had had frogs before the plants put in, so what I thought should not be valid. Then Koi may be the main reason. :-\

I love my frogs!  We even feed them - freeze dried crickets on a piece of fishing line kinked at the end so the crickets can stay on.  The frogs become very tame.  The picture is of M2 - male frog #2 - hugging my foot at our last feeding for this season.  The frogs even "learn" to put a front paw on the fishing line & pull their heads back to take the crickets of the string.  My koi don't seem to bother then.  I do have a shallow stream area & one small shallow area in the pond.  Plus I got these net bags for plants that I put along 1 side of my pond because a majority of my pond is 4 1/2' deep with straight sides.  The frogs love to sit in those plants that grow in the plant bags that I have hanging on the wall.

Kris- love it thanks for sharing.
I had frogs in my old pond and it had koi. They seemed to get along just fine.
I know the tadpoles would disappear because the fish WOULD eat those. o( :'(
