Well the March winds are here and all those darn Elm seeds are blowing into the pond faster than me or the skimmer can get them >:(---So please excuse the mess ....My blues are ready to eat--and those babies are just growing by leaps and bounds ....Fred made it thru this brutal winter with out looking too skinny...And while Ginger's lump is still there it hasn't grown anymore....And I hooked up the UV last week--So I can see the bds again  @O@......And I no longer have to tell people--No really there are koi in there...You just can't see them  {:-P;;.....

last spring Ginger was a bit over 30" and Fred was 28"...I'm not sure how big the other three are--the only reason Fred and Ginger were measured was they were getting injections and we go by their length...

Vickie the pond is 14x18 and 5' deep in the far end....it holds 6,000 gallons right now--but, we have enough liner left to go 2 more blocks high when we get a little extra $$

Beautiful fish!  I'd love to have some that big, maybe the heron wouldn't be able to get them!

Karen even though a heron couldn't pick them up--they can still jab them in the head and kill them.....We have been very fortunate not to have to deal with herons because we have a creek behind the house and I see them in it all the time...

Beautiful pictures :)  They are all so large!!  The last time I saw my Koi in the pond, a great blue heron dove in and started shoving his head up and down eating my fish ;( I have always wondered why those birds NEVER TOUCH THE BULL HEADS  >:(-

what is a bullhead?I've always been told to dig deep and dig straight down to prevent the herons....and if that don't work--employ the 3 S's...Shoot,shovel and shut up...

Lawanna, those things are so ugly, YUCK!   They are dark grey, have those ugly long things coming from  their mouths! They hog all the food, they are the first ones there :( If you get within reach of their mouths, the pain they inflect is like a tazer!!  You only have to feel that sensation ONCE >:(-
The great blue herons, yep, right to jail you go. the  {-) will look for people trying to shoot, or any other way  harm those darn birds, RATS

Eww those sound terrible...Yep I can talk the talk but, can't walk the walk...We had a little night heron eating my babies--somehow he found his way into the gh were we keep the fish we sell...I caught him and relocated him to the city pond a couple miles away....even that size---I was skeered of that bill  :o.So I caught him with my net and put him in a box and opened the box when I got there and he flew off..I couldn't imagine the pain a blue heron could cause....

Bullheads are catfish. The brown bullheads are known as mud cats. A lot of farm ponds have them. If you want to put a catfish in your pond, I prefer channel catfish. They are cleaner.
Happy ponding,
