AOL FREE?
« on: May 23, 2011, 08:31:08 AM »
I just learned, after paying for years that there is a free plan. I don't see the downside.
Does anyone know anything about this?
You won't get Mcafee woth the free plan, but so what.

Your input please.

I have no idea about free AOL Jerry, however, generally one gets what one pays for....   ;D

I agree, I spoke to a rep, she said nothing will change but i should buy Mcafee  for a monthly fee.

I am still researching it. I asked in a Tech Chat forum. A few said it was good, a few said the guys who liked it were cheapskates!

Jerry, you can use the AOL software if you have broad band/high speed internet. I have done it. If you have virus protection on your computer that covers you online, you won't need to pay for it.

Jerry, I've had the free version of AOL for years. I dont' even remember when we stopped paying for it.  In fact, I thought it was a mandatory switch for everyone as I stopped seeing the AOL disks showing up at the box stores each year when they made upgrades.  Had no idea that people were still paying to use their AOL account.

I am no longer awful with computers, but do worry I will lose a ton of stuff.  They say NO!

Well, I don't do much with it other than send and read email and make folders for emails that I want to keep. I also use the AOL chat feature once in a while if someone I know is online at the same time.

I use to keep "favorites" websites of  pages I wanted to go to without memorizing their web address. There use to be some kind of "favorites" function. I lost those addresses when  I got a new computer (old one kept crashing) and cannot get them back due to they are saved on the computer itself via the AOL program installed. They were not saved to a server per say.  I cannot retrieve them, but that may be because my modem is hooked up to the new computer now, so no internet connection on the old computer to be able to log into AOL on the old computer and open the program.  So I do not know if you would lose this kind of data by switching to FREE AOL if you kept the same computer.  I have noticed that on my version of AOL now, there isn't a "favorites" folder function, and I've been operating without it for some time now. What I do instead now is "book mark" the webpages I want to save via the WINDOWS 7 software.

Beyond not keeping the old saved emails and webpages that I had saved (again may be because I switched computers..they may still be there If I was able to get an internet connection on the old computer to open the program) I don't recall missing anything else.  I am not sure what happened with the email contacts or address book, as in I don't remember if they were saved or not - its been so long ago, and people keep changing their email addresses anyway.

So all in all I am okay with it.

Yes there is a "Favorite Places" area. I do use it as well as the same functions you do,
Sounds like I can save 15.00 per month!

Where do you see it on the free AOL version? I logged in today and don't see a tab for it anywhere...but would not matter at this point as there are other ways to save websites now. Only matters if you are concerned about losing any existing saved lists I guess- to this I do not have the answer due to computer switch.

But, would do without rather than pay monthly for an email account.
