Passion Flower pics
« on: May 14, 2011, 10:00:31 AM »
Passion Vine bloom. I have long forgotten its name exactly...

I like the center of the bloom - it reminds me of battlestar gallactica shows, I see the center as some sort of aircraft landing tower...did I ever say I had a vivid and wild imagination??

I guess bees and butterflies count as aircraft....

I love passion flowers!  I think I have one similar to yours too!  Have you gotten fruit on yours before?  I have small fruit but they make great garden break treats.  Yum.

Never seen fruit on mine. Maybe mine is not the fruiting variety? Or do they all bear fruit at some point when the conditions are right?

Thanks for the id Sean. Any idea if this one will bear fruit for me if the conditions are right? I don't know if all Passiflora bear fruit or not...

Ok took inventory and I only have 3 different types of Passion Flowers.  They all have small fruit except the one I bought that claims it has big fruit, the beautiful white bloom (nada so far).

How old do you think the plant has to be before it will bear fruit?

Jerry- Nice pics. The leaves on your plant look different from mine. Mine kinda has 3 points on the leaves like 3 ovoid leaves joined at the base.  Does yours stay green during the winters there?

I bought my first vine in a gallon pot.  It was very twigy (my last photo).  Took two years in small pot to bear small fruit.  Leaves drop in winter and skinny vines dry up so I cut them back.

Second big purple flower vine was a bit larger, still twiggy and planted in ground.  It grew fruit the first year but very tiny ones.  This vine keeps about 80% of its leaves and vines.  After 3 years the vines and flowers cover an arch trellis.  Many flowers and lots of larger fruits this year.

The big 5 gallon pot, tall 5 ft tall (staked) white flower vine I bought last spring and planted in the ground now looks scrawny, possibly because it doesn't get as much sun.  But the leaves are very large and shiny/waxy which stay year round.

it is just split pieces of bamboo.  Now completely obscured by the vines.

Just found this photo from a month ago of my arched trellis.  Originally put up for climbing roses, but passion fruit took over.  This vine stays green all year round, flowers and fruits when the weather is warm.

Unfortunately Passiflora Belotii is sterile. I has the ability to produce fruit but it will not contain seed.

So that's why there isn't much fruit in mine, the one on the arch!  :D  Thx Sean, that's good to know.  So I'm not going crazy!  I thought I forgot to spread compost around the vine base. Phew!

Here's the not so juicy passion fruit on my arched trellis, again (what happened to it above!?!).
