Interesting hardy lily behaviour
« on: July 03, 2011, 06:32:31 AM »
One of my hardy's is producing a very interesting bloom, I'm sure there is a technical term for it. Pretty cool to see, wondering if I could propagate a new plant from this.

You can see a second blossom and a couple leaves coming out. This is the second time this plant has produced flowers like this. Damn if I can't remember the strain.

It is a viviparous bloom, where a new plantlet forms from the blossom of an old bud (on hardies).  It's been documented in most hardies with mexicana heritage.  I let one develop on a Colorado for about a month last year, and then successfully transplanted it.  I found when it was attached to the mother plant, it often had more blossoms than pads.

I could have sworn that I replied to this thread earlier...maybe I did not click "post" so it never made it.  Anyway, glad you were able to get your pics up, these vivaparous blooms are always so cool to see and mine never do it.
My next female cat will be called "Whata Lily"!
