Victoria Longwood hybrid
« on: June 23, 2011, 09:42:30 AM »
The Longwood is doing great so far. The largest pad just broke surface on the 18th, and is now 33 inches across. The new pad just opened today and it looks like it is going to have a turned up rim.   @O@ @O@ @O@

Any sign of a bud yet? Is your 'Longwood' pond on a filter? I wish I had the space for pond large enough to grow one.

Holy crap! 33"? :o I thought mine were big at 9"LOL....I love those, they are so cool, but I would have to move to the country to have a pond to accommodate them. How big will they ultimately get?

Lynn in warmer climates with longer growing seasons, the pads grow to 6 feet across I think, maybe larger. I am hoping mine will get to 5 feet across.  No buds yet but I expect it may be a while before it blooms. I am enjoying the pads right now.  @O@  I hope the pads all start turning up and forming a rim to make the leaf look like a pan.

One full size pad would cover your pond pretty good, Jerry!  Not even going to think "want" for mine!   :o :D

Frank would you share a wider photo shot of your new pond with the large Vic pads?  8-)~

Thanks, everyone.  There is a bog vegitative filtration pond that is 6' X 8' X 14". A waterfall from there goes to the upper pond which is approx. 16' X 20' X2'. A waterfall lets the water go into the lower pond which is apprx. 26' X 24' X 2'. There is another bog pond with a sidewalk leading to a patio between the bog pond and the lower pond. It is 6' X 14' X 16". Hope this helps.
Jerry, I have had a Longwood grow and bloom in an 8 foot diameter stock tank, but it takes up the whole pond.

The Longwood has a bloom bud that broke the surface today!   @O@ @O@ Look's like another bud may a week or so behind this one, unless what appears to be a bud is another leaf.

Thanks, everyone.

Tink, I will definitely post a pic of the bloom. Not sure about the baby, though. No babies here. Maybe I could borrow one? My pads are still just a little over 3 feet wide so I do not know if they would hold one. We shall see.  @O@ @O@

Very good!

3ft pad, baby. . . Think "Plastic." (After thinking, "Lawsuit!")

Really want to grow a Vic one of these days. And thanks to Kit Knotts & friends (victoria-adventure.org,) there really are no "secrets" to growing them, even from seed.

Mike, that not as easy as you think. I grew a V. cruziana while living in Central Florida. I managed to dwarf it to 28" pads and grew it in a hot tub shell. Here is what it looked like.

Happy ponding,

Look at the second pic on Reply 20 and you will see the second bud already near the surface of the water. I will have another bloom in just a few days! Will post a 1 am pic later.  @O@

The first bloom did not open yesterday, but the 2nd bloom opened last night!  @O@ Here is a pic of the bloom at 9 pm (white), a pic at noon today (closed), and a pic at 5 pm today (pink). I am also including a pic of a new pad still unfurled and under water.   @O@

Congratulations!! I hope you get many more! I miss having them in my pond. The last few summers have been too short and cool for them but I do hope to grow them again.
Your ponds are very beautiful and so are the photos of your lovely tropicals! I have lost all of mine due to the cold and really enjoy seeing yours.
