Keeping my fingers crossed...
« on: July 27, 2011, 12:56:14 PM »
They just implemented something at school about 3 weeks ago, which I have mixed feelings about.  One of the new requirements is that you intern for 130 hours doing something close to what you're attending school for.  For me, it's doable because I'm still unemployed, but when I signed up to pay my $45,000 for school, that wasn't one of the requirements.  If I was employed full time, how do they expect me to take 130 hours of vacation time to work somewhere else for free???  I don't think it's fair or rational, I understand the purpose, but how do they expect someone working full time and attending school to work for 3 weeks for free?

On the upside of this, however...
I have an interview today for the city to intern in their IT department, and hopefully if I do get this internship and do well maybe it will be a foot in the door for something permanent?... I'm hoping.  The person who sent me the email for the interview seemed rather unprofessional, though.  This was his email: "When can you come in for an interview?".  That's it.  No greeting.  No introduction.  I've never communicated to this person before... have no idea who he is other than the signature in the email .  Maybe I have high expectations.. like people aren't texting me from their iPhone for a job interview!  sheesh...
I'm broke and can't afford to pay attention, so you might have to lend me an ear.

Hopefully the interview went well today.  I had to intern many moons ago and the hours were very flexible.  I had to have the hours completed before I could graduate since the internship was considered a required class and assigned a grade.

With respect to the e-mail asking when you could come in for an interview.  When I was still working I would occasionally be assigned an intern.  Quite frankly I hated getting them.  The interns usually were either criminal justice majors or sociology majors.....basically young college kids who thought they had all the answers.  For me they were just extra work trying to find meaningful things for them to do and trying to keep them out of confidential files and reports.  I especially disliked the attractive females because I then had to deal with young male officers who thought they were God's gift to women......

Hopefully the person who called you was tickled pink to actually be interviewing an adult who has his act together.

I was thinking along the same lines as Mikey--an experienced person who has been in the workplace and understands the position.  I know where my youngest daughter works (for a city court system) --they struggle to even find a good IT person.  They had an excellent one, but he left for a better paying position.  They hired a younger 'kid' and he screwed up their computers to the point where they were crashing and they couldn't even use their programs.  The hired the other guy back on a part-time basis just to get them up and running and maintained again.

Don't sell yourself short--you can do this!   8)

Well, they want to hire me for the internship... the interview went well.  Next phase is the background check (working for the gov't - city) so it's to be expected.  The guy said that if I do well and complete the internship, that puts me on the list for next permanent hire when there's an opening.  Can't wait to get started!

My wife is going to nursing school. She is working full time and also doing clinicals every Friday. She is wore out but she keeps counting down the days till she graduates. A average. I am so proud of her.

You can do anything you set your mind to whether fair or not.

Thanks.  Now I go for the livescan so they can make sure I'm who I say I am!  haha  I called the lady I was supposed to call today, she said she hadn't heard from the guy.  So she emailed him while I was on the phone and he responded and told her to start the paperwork.  At least he will see that I'm taking it seriously!  I'm really hoping this will eventually turn into something permanent... would love to work for the city gov't.

You may see things differently than the average young college student too.
