Darn Turtles, or is it the fish?
« on: May 28, 2012, 08:18:39 AM »
So this one pot of water lillies was eaten to a nub.  OK, I won't plant that variety again.
Guess what?  It came back beautifully and was not eaten again! The pads broke the surface yestrday!
Went to see how they were this AM.  You guessed it GONE!They were left alone for many weeks too.  No idea why this happens..
If I knew the varieties I have in the pond that do so well , I'd have more, or at least advise fellow ponders what was safe.
In the past lotus did fine. I have great trepadation about putting 2 containers of lotus in the pond today, but here goes!

You know somtimes they just develop the taste for plants and thats all--you'll probably never find a variety they won't eat....and its usually one that gets all the others started...

Maybe, but the existing ones are fine.  Sure a nip here and there, but there is plenty to go around.

I have one coming that has thorns! Maybe that will work.  Now that they get mackerel too they may use the thorns for toothpicks! ::)

It maybe more to do with it being a tender young plant then that variety.  Just a guess.

I think so too Howard. I will pull the one, let it recover and try again.  I think the others get nibbeled too, but are so profuse it does not matter much.

Now of course I don't keep turtles but, I can always tell if we have a turtle in one of the water gardens because they like to just bite off the leaves-they don't eat them...just bite the stem and the leaf is left to float around....
