Overwintering taro..........
« on: October 28, 2014, 08:58:30 AM »
Have any of you had any luck with putting the tubers into dormancy?
I don't have a greenhouse or bright window available, last year I was able to get 1 out of 4 taros through the winter.
I kept them in a bucket of pea gravel (occasionally watering them) in a heated garage without very much light.
Any tips on improving my odds?
Thanks.

I keep mine in the green house over the winter so I have not tried to keep them otherwise. I would suggest a few things but hopefully someone with experience in storing them in a different manner will reply.
1) Put a light with a grow light bulb over them. If you still have them in pea gravel, they may need a little liquid fertilizer in the water.
2) Put them in damp soil and bring them in the house putting them in an area where they have as much light as possible.

I know Vickie stores hers in her basement but she keeps them in their pots and has shop lights over them. She does well with storing them that way.

When I had some in pots in the tanks, I would take off some runners and simply place them in a bucket of water near a south window for the winter.  They didn't look all that great, but I would pot them up in the spring and with a well established root system, they'd take off quickly.

I did change their water often with room temperature fresh water with a sprinkle of miracle grow.
