My first Brugs
« on: August 12, 2006, 05:52:50 PM »
I succumbed to temptation the other day and bought a couple of Brugs. I have no clue what to do with them. I figured since I now have a greenhouse I could overwinter them. I hope one can cut them back for overwintering.

One has variegated foliage, I believe other one says it is pink. No clue at the moment. They were cheap, in 4" pots.

Hi LeeAnn,

I have been growing brugs for about 4 years now. They should be ok in your greenhouse as long as they don't freeze. Some of my friends leave theirs in the ground in sheltered locations and they survive but are sometimes lost if we have a hard winter. You can also bring them into the garage as long as it doesn't freeze, stop watering them and start watering again in the spring and put them into the greenhouse. Mine have experience light frost and survived.
Goo luck with them. They are really beautiful. I especially like the fragrance.

as for what else to do with them - water them and feed them vigoursly! chop off the top of the stalk when it reaches the height you would like to see it start branching out. i raised a pair from those 4" starters and they are above the roof now! one of mine was also the pink. they start a bit slow but will suddenly take off at a certain point. both were flowering in their second year.

Good news. They do grow very quickly when it's warm. Do you think they will bloom this year?
I restarted mine this year so they haven't bloomed yet either.

They are only a foot tall so I doubt it. This cloudy weather we are having isn't helping either. Sure could have used it earlier when I was in full planting mode. I've got so much work to do now from the biz trip that I can't even step outside!
