Had to go wading in the pond today.
« on: September 17, 2015, 01:25:31 PM »
Last weekend I was trying to reposition a rock on the front of my waterfall that shifted over the years.  Big mistake - slow motion rockslide of many rocks into the pond!  Crap . . .

I took off work today at 11:30, put on my bathing suit and old sneakers I use for wading and got into the pond.  Water temp not too bad, plus it was hot today.

I positioned a 2x4 from the waterfall to the side of the pond so I would have something to hold onto since the rubber liner is as slick as wet ice.  Got all of the rocks out of the pond, rebuilt the waterfall façade/top mostly while in the pond - came out really nice.

Changed the design so the façade was not just straight up-and-down, more sloping like a mountainside.  I had a lot of rocks left over.  Added some to the rock "necklace" around my pond, piled the rest of to the side.

Three-and-a half hours, but everything came out better than I thought it would.

Congrats.
I'm going to have to tear down and reassemble my waterfall area before next summer. Can't wait.

Reedman, that is great that you were able to repair your pond so quickly.  Can you post pics?

Bob_A:  thanks.

matherfish:  I asked my wife to take some pics of my waterfall later today when the sun is higher in the sky.  I'll post them later when I get back from my travels.

Two pics of my pond that my wife took today.

The biggest goldfish are about 11" long.  Not sure how many are in the pond - probably 35 goldfish and a two dozen rosey red minnows.  Water lily pads at the end of their life this season.

I rebuilt the waterfall Thursday after a massive rockslide into the pond last weekend.  Waded in, retrieved the rocks and rebuilt most of the waterfall façade while I was in the pond.  1200 gallons-per-hour pump.

Thanks matherfish.  I have a small yard - only 14' wide.  Had to be creative to get a 12' long by 8' wide pond to fit.

matherfish:  thanks again

Indiana Karen: my waterfall has three step rocks.  I built the basic shape with dry-fit concrete blocks.  Kinda like an easy chair style with higher sides to keep the water in.  Laid the rubber liner in the pond hole and over the concrete blocks.  Then I used good old Pennsylvania fieldstone to build the façade.   1200 GPH pump makes just the right water flow over the 2' wide flat step stones.

miguynmkoi:  thanks.

I'm going thin the herd some next weekend.  I saw a Craigslist post: guy about an hour away with a large earthen farm pond who wants more fish.  I have about six dozen babies from this spring in a 100-gallon-stock tank to take to him.  Plus whatever not-so-great-looking adult goldfish (sorry dudes/dudettes . . .).

yes it looks super, but consider waders. a cut on your legs and all that bacteria is scary.

I had a bad infection once, they never detrmimed the source. I now err on the side of caution. :'(
