Finally going from watergarden to koi pond

with Gene's from Koi Village expertise    and my husbands labor  . After taking out koi ,shubunkin and goldfish we have returned the largest koi to the pond. I think I am seeing barbels on 2 of the fish I thought were gf. My question is.. is it definately koi if barbels show? How long does it take to see barbels on young fish ? If koi and goldfish mate do the babies have barbels but not considered koi? As you can see I am very confused about all this .The fish I am talking about look to be about a year old ..also found a few very little ones which seem to have color so thought I would put them in a tank until I know for sure what they are.  Thanks in advance for your help. We had some plants and we will try them  The walls are straight down and its deep so its more difficutl placing them now. . The koi nibbled a little before but now they are all over them .  We are changing the look of our waterfall to more of a stream and hopefully will have some plants there as well. We shall see. Yes, definitely, a koi if it has barbels. I can see barbels on fish as small as one inch, BUT they are really hard to see with the naked eye.

Koi and goldfish can mate. But any goldfish genes will not have barbels and most likely will be sterile.

If you have some fish that are a year old and you can not see barbels, then they are goldfish.

I respectfully disagree. Koi/GF mules can definitely have barbels. Best to wait it out and check body conformation to be absolutely sure. Once they grow out a little, it will be obvious. Koi mules have a body conformation more like goldfish.
