Hydrocleys nymphoids.....
« on: March 25, 2007, 04:14:44 PM »

Or water Poppy..... I am told that I can grow this in my pond and that it is not invasive. Anyone tried?  Love to hear what experience you have had.....

I grew it when I lived in NC, could not get it to bloom more than a few times all summer. >:(
But then again, that was when I was a novice ponder,
didn't use compost, tiny little pots, etc. ;)

It likes the heat down here . . . grows well and bloomed for me even in shade - and not planted in dirt at all.  I got my stock from Tammie in Hawaii and her plants always do well.  (She actually sent it as a present for the turtles.)  It overwintered for me most years, but I've lost it in the last couple of years . . . .

I think it will do its best to take over your pond.  I know of a person that lost a pond to it....and she was in Delaware.

Craig is sooo right....it is very invasive...even overwinters here and its supposed to be a tropical  ::).....and since the babies can stay attached to the mother plant or even live just floating...it will have no boundaries.....

Lawanna,
Will you have some of this for sale? I like Joyce's idea for containing  it.

@O@ Good deal. Would you add it to my order please?
Speaking of the finicky plants, how do you tell if the mosiac plant survived? Mine has one naked stem. Is it history? It was kept in the greenhouse.

My moneywort needs constant cutting back too.   Your is a fine looking plant, I would try it in a water in a container as Joyce suggested.
At a recent party (Ventura County Koi Society) many wanted Moneywort cuttings.  They got 'em!

In my pond (at the old house  :'(, of course) I had money wart planted all around my waterfall and along the stream. It was soooooo invasive, I was pulling it out weekly and throwing it away. Sure didn't know people were actually wanting it.

Well, if mine is gone I'm not messing with it anymore either. It's food for everything too. It's a shame. It's gorgeous.  :'(
