A Dove - at the bird bath
« on: June 24, 2009, 07:08:07 PM »
We don't feed the birds but we keep fresh water around for them.  With this hot weather they seem to appreciate it.

I thought doves were white. So, I guess not all doves are white?  How can you tell it apart from a pigeon?  I have some kind of large grey bird that drinks at my fountain and I cannot tell if it is a dove or a pigeon...
My next female cat will be called "Whata Lily"!

I'm not a bird expert but I think there are lots of kinds of doves.  From a quick peak at Google I think this might be a White-winged Dove (http://identify.whatbird.com/obj/267/overview/White-winged_Dove.aspx).  As to the difference between Doves and Pigeons...  here's the word from the American Dove Association http://identify.whatbird.com/obj/267/overview/White-winged_Dove.aspx  In other words, they are the same.  Dove just sounds more glamorous I guess.  :)

We have Morning Doves here and they are so gentle looking and scare very easily. I just love seeing them,

We have a lot of feeders in the back yard. It is our haven as well. Every evening we sit on the deck and let the pygmy goat eat along the fence and watch them. They all have babies right now and the baby doves, cardinals and tanagers are coming to the feeder with their parents. The babies still want the parents to feed them so they just sit and chirp until the parents feed then feed them. The Mockingbirds young are still in the nest, the adults peck a mouthfull of suet and then fly away in the same direction toward their nest. I brought home 50 pounds of bird food yesterday.

We have lots of Mourning Doves and the pidgeons we have stay in our barns.  The Pidgeons are much larger and 'talk' amongst themselves.  I love the song of the dove.  Doves are so populous in some states that there is open season on them all year long.   :o
