Got new plants today (pics)
« on: April 24, 2007, 06:08:40 PM »
oh my, I stopped by a Garden Center on my way home - just to take a quick peak & see if the plant shipment for spring has arrived..

..duuh! They have several Waterlilies too!

I got N. Alba and N. James Brydon!

I know that Nymphaea Alba is very vigorous, but I think it won't take over my pond considering my climate. Although my present lilies are surprisingly vigorous althoug catagorizes as "medium"..

So far I have;

N.Laydekeri Lilacea (dwarf)
N.James Brydon      (small)
N.Albida            (medium)
N.Marliacea Rosea   (medium)
N.Mrs. Richmond     (vigorous)
N.Alba              (vigorous)
Nuphar Luteum       (vigorous)

I also bought a Wisteria (purple flowers)
and one Clematis "Alpina", gorgeous hanging blue flowers..
AND one plant that looks kinda like Rhubarb but is not..
oh, and this one  Actinidia Kolomikta
-it will climb up the fence behind the Pond ;)

I have also lots of flower seeds that I'll sow in around the garden :)

I have also collected a few grassy plants from a nearby wild pond/lake

Boy, am I glad it's spring up here too! :D

Now, let me try to post a pic or two of the pond which I took yesterday .. or was it the day before

As you can see, I'm right behind you all - the garden will be green & lush eventually, just takes a little longer when living 64°N

Looking towards the house

The skimmer is filled with quilt batting "Esther-style"

Pond Grass from a nearby pond/lake

Pond Iris planted soilless "Sheryl-style"

Marsh Marigold coming out of hibernation

Stream / waterfall

Mud pond upper

Fish & lily pond - clear water - visible fishies, but also the pump & plant pots. When the lilies will cover the surface the pump & "pipelines" won't be visible..
yes, I know .. there's debris in the bottom - I'm going to leave it and plant lots of oxygenators in it (crazy??)

Patio view - overall view

Syringa tree beginning to grow leaves - it's the tree next to my kitchen window, when it's blooming the delightful scent enters through the open kitchen window at night..

That's it for now - it's only a week since our last frost, so no wonder the vegetation hasn't come more to life yet.
-the mercury is slowly climbing upwards-

Kristin, didn't your mother teach you it was dangerous to stop at a garden centre 'just to peek'?

Sounds like you are going to be busy in the garden for the next little while. Your water is lovely and clear - I have a cross between pea soup and a toxic spill.

Cheers,

Mike

My mom didn't teach me nothin' bout no garden centers!  lol JBut then she wasn't an obsessive collector, either.

I have been pretty good so far this year - had to make a few quick stops for repotting supplies but didn't have time to look around in the plants, which was a good thing because lots of good stuff had just come in. I did manage to grab a Louisiana iris, though. I hope to have some time next week to see if I've missed anything.

I'm also going to a plant swap in early May, and I have lots of good trades lined up there, so I'll be getting lots of plants for basically free. Can't beat that!

Kristin-
Your pond is looking good! I am in the same weather situation as you are. Makes the pond look sort of boring until things wake up, but it sure is exciting when it does! Syringa is lilac, correct? I love them!

I'm waiting for the garden center to get plants too, I've been stopping by for a month now- but so far they haven't had anyting out I "need".

Hi Kristin, Everything is greening up nicely and looking great O0. You did such a good job on that pond. How well does that skimmer work for you?
I have to say that I love that fence o(:-) Whenever I see fences in sale fliers I always look, but have never seen one with the beautiful arches like that.

THANKS everyone for your comments :)
Mike, my mother actually approves! LOL

Steve, the skimmer works really fine. It's a "portable" one, made by Heissner in Germany.
oh, and the fence is produced in Estonia  :tease:  :)
