Barbara Dobbins - Hardy Vip growers expertise needed
« on: May 03, 2007, 11:40:44 AM »
It is a hardy vip. Any idea what I should look for on the flowers to know if it is propagating through viviparous means.
I normally get rid of spent buds unless I think there is a possible cross in the making.
It doesn't look like it continues to rot away like a vip pad on a tropical.
I looked at Colonel A.J. Welch and Georgia Peach as examples.

Photo from victoria adventure, photographer is by Kathryn Perry.

Any idea of a way to jumpstart the process like we can in a tropical vip?
There are only a few vip hardies and anyone with experience in propagating them through vip means would be appreciated.

It produces vivip blooms sometimes.   Every bloom won't be vivip.   They develope quickly.   Leave attached to the stem, when you see roots forming.    Just leave it until roots are fairly well developed and pot it up.   Very easy.

Colorado makes vivip blooms sometimes too.   The common denominator in all of these hybrids that produce vivip blooms is Col. A.J. Welch in their background.

Thanks Marilyn C.
I haven't had Colorado produce a vip in the last 3 years. It must take a special type of conditions to get it to occur.

I don't know what makes it happen...you might get one or two a year.   Same with Barabara Dobbins...it doesn't happen that often.   It is kind of odd, because it takes a hardy rhizome a couple of years to develope from seed before it can bloom.   But, those little vivip buds will sometimes produce a little bud growing right up and out of the old flower.   Kinda cute...and strange. :)

Thanks Marilyn C,
I live close enough to you to say I have the same climate so I will keep looking. I have the 1 Barbara Dobbins now and at least 6 blooming size Colorados.
