On lilypad color ??
« on: May 01, 2007, 05:04:40 PM »
Recently someone responded to one of my trade offers and mentioned that they were looking for hardy lilies with variegated pads.

I have not owned very many different lilies.

Seems to me that a lot of hardies have leaves that emerge with speckles or mottles of burgundy but they mostly mature to plain green.

Can anyone recommend some hardies that hold their variegated pad color?

Chromatella and Georgia Peach have quite striking and elegant marbling, planted in semi shade they are more inclined to hold their markings. Lucida is probably the most variegated, all Summer through

Thanks, guys!

I seem to remember also that Graziella had a flush of gorgeous mottling near the crown pretty much all season.

I got an Arc en Ciel from a forum member last year but it apparently didn't make it thorugh this past winter. We had the late freeze after many things were starting to sprout and I seem to have lost it then.

Cath,

I was just reading this. Strange, cuz yesterday I found your monkey flower just starting to sprout, ANd your adorable little stiletto Hosta and thought of you.  :)
Was the Arc you lost one that I sent? Thought maybe I should ask... I can send you another!

Cathy sent me the Allegheny monkey flower a few years ago. What a great bloomer. I love it.

One more thought, from just looking at the growth in my pond a few minutes ago~
I noticed this last year and just remembered it now.

Lilies grown in a good depth of dirty fish-poopy gravel (no soil), have bolder variegation and hold it better than my soil-raised lilies. I can see the difference midsummer with my Graziellas that are raised both ways (Please, no gravel bad/ gravel good debate!  I'm just making an observation).

For really big, fast-growing plants with bountiful blooms, nothing beats enriched clay soil though.

Also, I'd like to express my thanks to those who have responded, and a general thanks to site admin and the wonderful crew of participants here. Your generosity with your time and knowledge is simply a joy to witness.

Thanks,

Laura
