is finally looking halfway decent. This is the third year for it. I made the new trellis for it and it seemed like moments later it was already too short. So we put cup hooks in the soffit of the shed and ran twine down to the trellis.

That's gorgeous, Esther!   @O@ I had no idea that a clematis would have that many blooms at a time.   :o

How beautiful!  Is that "jackmanii" Clematis?  I had that variety at our last house on a fence.  I have a different color planted on our lamp post here.  It looks like you have the perfect location for yours.

Maybe it's been more than three years since I planted it. Before I began reading watergardening forums, I never paid any attention to the names of plants so I don't know it's name.

Are there any expert clemantis growers out there? I've always wondered if I should cut it back down in the fall to, say a foot or so. I have noticed that in the spring the longer ends are dead and the new growth comes from way lower on the vine. Somewhere I heard that it likes it's roots cool or shaded so that is why I sat Mr. Dutch boy there. His backside faces south west.

Somewhere out there in Ponder-land there is an expert and she told me to cut it back to a foot for my clematis and it worked right away.  @O@
But I'd wait to see what she says.

Love the color of your clematis  o(:-)

You should wait until early spring to cut it back to about a foot. Cutting in fall might encourage new growth that will not live through your winter.

Jackmanii is the most popular and widely available purple Clematis that blooms in summer. It should be cut back every year or it becomes a tangled mess that blooms at the top of a bunch of brown stems.

I agree, cut it back in early spring.  I don't often trim mine, but that is the time to do it.
