I want to build a disappearing fountain- Need help!

HI, I want to build a disappearing fountain, one that shoots about 5 ft high.  I have (at least!) 2 problems, one is I know nothing about building a water feature and the 2nd is that my yard slopes.  I had in mind to use a child's rigid plastic pool and line the outside w/ some decorative blocks.  My whole yard is sand (I'm in coastal NC).  This area is near the drain lines, so I do not want to dig more than a few inches.  I have the directions for building a disappearing fountain in a mag. (Budget Backyard Makeovers"- great mag!) but I definitely need some guidance.  All suggestions will be appreciated.  Thanks, Camilla

I have built a few of these. The first time I used a plastic barrel that fits into a whiskey barrel. After about 2 years the weight of the soil surrounding it started to collapse it in some so there was not as much of a water reserve. I was doing it on the cheaper way of construction and it was fine for 2 years. The only thing is, my pot was almost 3 feet tall so it splashed too far and I had to refill splashing and evaporating water about once a week.

It is a 3.10 Mb pdf so if you are on dial-up be patient. Right click the link, open in a new window or tab if you have IE7 and go get a soda or something for a few minutes.
It will take you start to finish on construction techniques that can be adapted to what you have in mind.

I used their knowledge to build 2 with success.
I don't have any pix on my computer right now but here is a link to a pic from one of my websites from 2004 when I had built it. Man it's unbelieveable to look back 3 years and see how much more stuff I have growing in my yard now.

I was trying to hurry and get to bed when I posted this last night. I read your reply and realized the brown tub in the picture with a water lily in it in the flower bed is actually the same as the one I originally used underground for the disappearing fountain. You can't see the bottom 2/3 of it as it is planted in the bed. That is what is buried beneath the black pot that is in the picture at that time.

Thank you Mary.  I am wondering what strength of pump I need.  The local pond/spa place told me that all the pumps he had would be too strong for what I wanted and that I could just get one at Lowes.  I am trying to figure out what I need and how much and what the approximate price will be.  Also, I need to decide where exactly to put it.  I want to be able to see it clearly from the deck which would mean it would be in full sunshine.  If it is a disappearing fountain- no standing water- does that mean algae will not be a problem?  Thanks for everyone's help!  Brandy

Algae can and will form anywhere there is standing water. But the good thing for you seeing you have no plants or fish to worry about is that you can use a little chemical in there to keep it under control. If it were mine, I'd probably use just a little bleach, cheap fix. There are chemicals you can buy that are made for small water features like fountains or birdbaths. Supposedly it is not harmful to animals or birds.

Thank you Esther.  I was reflecting back to the unfortunate experience I had w/ the fountain my cousin bought me from Lowes- it was one of those artificial rock ones, large and very nice, but I had the problem w/ algae and the blasted thing cracked in several places, Lowe's couldn't even tell me what to use to patch it, so now I'm using it as a planter!
I am still planning my fountain and hoping I have a lot better success w/ it than the one I just mentioned.  Since my yard slopes, rather than digging (the drain field is all through my back yard), I think I will use railroad ties to create a square, pour in topsoil and level the area, put pool and fountain in, then fill the space between the pool and the ties w/ topsoil.  Then I can put some plants in the corners, maybe some vines too.  I have SO many questions!  How do you winterize your fountain?  Will the moisture it provides allow me to plant some plants that prefer a damper environment?  I appreciate everyone's help!  Camilla
