I went to brunch at Longwood today and took quite a few photos... I hope you will enjoy them as much as me!

Wonder how they do it...steam pipes and black dye they are already at 78 F!  Also note that there is a swede passed out on a bench in the background...I think she was patient as I was taking a few too many photos...I still have to resize the Orchid room photos, something for tomorrow.

Enjoy,

Gary

Wow. I see their famous Longwood hybrid cannas in the back there.  o(:-)

That Blue Cloud Gigantea is gorgeous.

Thanks for the pics. I'd love to go there someday.

When in DC last year we had planned a visit to Longwood's as I was told it was a must see.  I figured it was only a 2-3 hour drive.  Then the day before our driving out to Longwood's I was looking at a map and noticed Gettysburg.....also a 2-3 hour drive.......  We went to Gettysburg instead.  I look forward to getting back there again in the near future and hope to take in Longwood.....

Forgot to mention- that Kousa is truly magnificent.

We used to have a few when we lived on L.I., and they were 30 year-old specimens much like the one you pictured. I always felt like I was walking around in a cloud when it was blooming. It was like the Tau. Here in Illinois, I've been pampering one for years and it's still just a stick with a few leaves on it. No Tau.

Gary, nice pics. Thanks! My parents took me there as a kid - even then I liked the waterlily ponds and still remember them. I've been wanting to get back for decades. It's only a couple hours away, near my mother-in-law (maybe THAT'S why I never go!  :o). I even met the guy online who does the tropical hibiscus there and he offered to give me a private tour. I really should take him up on that.

Okay Mike  I can put one item on the plus side.

Jerry you are right when you have 30+ people working on a series of Ponds its bound to make for a wonderful water garden.  Tim Jennings has done a wonderful job after taking over for Pat Nut and duringthe off season if takes care of the ferns.

Shiela  lol, I can understand why you don't make the visit...maybe sneak up and don't say anything to the MIL.  If you do let me know, we have season membership and I'm only 10 minutes away!

Karen: One of my favorite places for beautiful old trees is Newport RI.  Both the Mansions and Salve regina campus have these magnificent old trees...I have to check my files to see if I still have some photos.

Mikey ...you chose poorly! :)

Gary, well, small world! I went back thru my emails and Tim Jennings is the guy who offered to show me the hibiscus display. He must be one multitalented man.

I've often thought my dream job would be working at a conservatory. I volunteered at the one in Baltimore for several months until I ended up with a full-time paying job working with plants as an interior landscaper.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments...Longwood is a special place, the conservatory is only a small portion, but certainly working one inch at a time we can create our own gardens that have their unique beauty and meaning for each of us!  keep on gardening!

Wow Gary, it looks great! I've actually only been to one "botanical gardens" and it was the Harry P. Leu Gardens [Orlando, FL]...I was rather impressed with the free-flowing design but Craig has been telling me about the Fairchild Gardens in Miami (Coral Gables)--I just hate traveling--but love flying!

Oh if one of these days I do really well I'm going to buy some land!

Hey Lou:

You're going to love Longwood, but I think you've been there before if I remember correctly.  Let me know when you're going and I'll meet you there!

Gary

Lorenzo:

Craig's suggestion is right on, it's one of my favorites in South Florida and of all things the Parrot Jungle has incredible gardens even though it recently located.  If you want to see some interesting ponds go to the holocaust Memorial on Miami Beach, very graphic sculpture admist a sea of white tropical lilies or even Hialeah Race track where we supplied 5,000 tropicals to fill in the pond (small lake) with color!

Hey LeeAnne,

Yes they do, but th ones they keep at Parrot Jungle have a special diet with extra carotene (sp?) so they are really bright orange!

When my daughter was a baby, I started her on either carrots or sweet potatoes for her first food, and she ate so much that the tip of her nose actually turned orange! It was so cute. Fortunately, my "baby book" had warned me about this!
