Skimmer question
« on: June 07, 2007, 08:05:52 AM »
I am using a Savio skimmer and am at a loss as to how to keep things such as my floating plants and fish from going into the skimmer.  Does onyone else have this problem?  If so, how did you solve it?

Thanks, Ruth   o( o( o(

The floating plants can be anchored. Hyacinth & lettuce can be kept in a "hula hoop' type thing that you can make out of black tubing. Then anchor it where you want it with fishing line.

You could probably do that with smaller plants, too. Like Duckweed & Salvinia.

Sometimes, the fish figure out how to swim out. I usually check once a week or so, and net the fish out.

I get a lot of submerged plants in the skimmer, like anacharis. I just toss it back into the pond. It's probably the same piece over & over that I keep tossing back.  ;)

I use the hula hoops also for floating plants, and I keep something in the skimmer basket area so when the frogs go in for breeding they have a way to jump back out, otherwise I have had a couple drown in it.  Seems all my frogs think the skimmer is for that purpose.

half inch drip irrigation tubing is cheap and you can make hoops in any size you like.
A wood dowel and a staple will hold it together.

I'm going to disagree with Jerry.
I would not use a staple to hold it together.

A loose staple in a pond could cause big problems!

Bonnie,
Good point.  I think I will use barbed tubing connectors.

You are right, but I'd never use a little staple, but a big husky one.  A compression fit would be best.

I finally got my feeder rings made and they work like a charm @O@.  I used 1/2"OD-3/8"ID vinyl tubing and 3/8" plastic barb connectors.

Also, was finally successful in getting a photo of my new elusive blue koi.

Thanks everyone.
